Quick sunset flight over downtown Simpsonville.

15/04/2024

The new DJI Avata 2 has been great so far. Picked it up last Thursday, and decided to try a quick flight up the Reedy that I had been envisioning for a while. Everything performed perfectly. Looking forward to a lot more flights with it over the Summer.

The mural in Camperdown Plaza was refreshed earlier this week with one of my aerial images of one of the most popular views of Greenville’s downtown area.

Wasn’t sure if I’d get over to see it considering my intense aversion to this week’s cold weather, but I stopped by yesterday afternoon to get a few shots.

Definitely worth checking out. Looks sharp and vibrant on the wall!

Even knowing Unity Park was designed to function as a flood plain, it’s still surreal to see all the places we walk and ride bikes covered in water.

With the rains finally letting up this afternoon it was a great opportunity to see how it all looked from the air—in spite of the heavy wind gusts.

Unfortunately, it won’t actually be named “Harambe Memorial Bridge,” and will likely go by some suitably generic “Skyway” designation. Seems like the city planners are really missing out on an opportunity to lean into this hard to create a memey tourist attraction. Put up a solemn gorilla statue in a wooded shrine, and watch people flock in for pictures.

Travelers are much more likely to stop by and spend money at the castle-like establishment if they can honor the most well-known gorilla (other than Coco) while they’re there.

All that aside, the bridge is pretty cool, and now open to cross. The trail ends at Mauldin High School currently, but I’m looking forward to it being fully connected to the SRT in the near future.

It's always cool to see images in print, especially so large!

A few more clips from Artisphere 2023. The weather forecast was full of ominous rain warnings, but it actually turned out to be a beautiful (if hot) day. .

A few clips from the Spring 2023 Pickleball Smash tournament that took place over the weekend at Southside Park.

I’ve never played, but it does seem fun. From an outside perspective, it looked like a scaled up doubles ping pong match where the participants ran on the table rather than standing behind it.

It was interesting to see from the air that 6 Pickelball courts can fit in the space of only 2 tennis courts.

I often overlook Conestee Nature Park as a photo spot since its close proximity to the low flying aircraft around Donaldson Center make it a no-go for drones.

Caught sunset there last week, and plan to visit more frequently with my land-based camera equipment in tow. It really is an amazing location that we are lucky to have so close by.

It’s a holiday week, so who knows where I’ll be or what I’ll be doing on Waterfall Wednesday. Here’s a quick look at some of the footage from Whitewater Falls earlier this month.

After going through some of my attempted Blood Moon shots in more detail, I was able to salvage a few that were passable. This one was a little before full eclipse, with a sliver of the moon still illuminated.

The main problem stemmed from not having enough light. I still had the 1.4 teleconverter on my 200-600mm lens hoping to get as close as possible. Unfortunately, the loss of light from the converter was just enough, when paired with the darkening moon, to make zeroing in on the correct settings and getting a tight focus very difficult in the few minutes I had before it descended into the clouds and behind the trees.

Added a bonus full moon shot from around 11 PM before the eclipse.

Fortunately it looks like the weather for tomorrow's home game against Louisville will not be quite as miserable as what we're experiencing today.

As I was setting up to shoot the eclipse this morning, I watched the reddening Moon slowly submerge into a low layer of clouds never to emerge again—at least for the night. This Moon isn’t red, and it’s not full, but it’s the most recent shot I have from a few days back . ⁣⁣

While I don’t really follow college football all that closely, it’s nearly impossible to live in Greenville and not be aware of how Clemson performed on any given weekend.

From what I gather, last Saturday vs Notre Dame wasn’t the best of days for Clemson fans.

Here are a few nice shots of Clemson Memorial Stadium to ease the burn, and maybe help in looking forward to next week’s home game against Louisville.

This project has finally made its way to Youtube. It was also presented at the Peace Center on October 3rd.

Several of my aerial shots were used in the video including the opening Fall shot of Table Rock and the reservoir. It's great to see the finished product after all this time! Description from YT below:

"“Where Water Flows” is an orchestral work and film that traces Greenville’s history, spotlighting iconic landmarks and Greenville’s dazzling downtown. Commissioned by the Peace Center to honor the Greenville Symphony Orchestra’s 75th anniversary, the piece was composed by Greenville-native and Furman University graduate Bob Farnsworth.

“The Greenville Symphony is a treasure for our community,” said Megan Riegel, the Peace Center’s president, and CEO. “As a longtime partner, the Peace Center wanted to do something meaningful to help celebrate their 75th anniversary. What better way than to commission a special piece of music from one of the country’s most prolific composers? The artfully arranged composition, and the film it is set to, is a gift for our friends at the symphony and the entire community.”

At its heart, “Where Water Flows” is a love letter to Greenville"
