2022 Art on Stage by Suendrini 👉 The Forget Me Project

In May 2021, the unmarked graves of 215 children who died in the Indian Residential School in Kamloops were uncovered. Suendrini (Suen) Goonesekera regarded this cruel disregard for the lives of the young as a disaster in the history of the relationship between settlers, and descendants of settlers, with the Indigenous Peoples in this country, which is synonymously known as Turtle Island.

Suen, an award winning artist who works entirely with discarded and discontinued textiles, initiated a collaborative and multigenerational art initiative entitled “Forget Me Project,” intended to derive clarity, process meaning, and acknowledge the emotions that arose from this devastating ongoing history that was covered up. (*The Indigenous peoples would say it was not a discovery, nor an isolated event).

Suen intentionally borrowed the name of her latest artwork from one of the songs by Born Ruffians, the Juno-nominated headliners of this festival. The poignant lyrics of “Forget Me” urges us to face dark truths and remember the lives of the innocent, even as news headlines come and go.

The Forget Me Project is a sobering reminder of a disastrous period of Canadian history, with rippling effects visible today. It serves as an offering of acknowledgment, reflection and bearing witness from the perspective of a settler.

The piece, which has taken over 16 months to conceive and create, consists of 215 individual fabric hearts, each representing the life of an indigenous child who did not return from the Kamloops BC residential school they were forced to attend. Each mini artwork was designed and sewn by hand from kits of reclaimed textiles provided by Suen to over 150 members of the public.

Her wish is that we may help her achieve one heart for every child who’s life was taken at the Indian Residential Schools across this land. Suen welcomes you to visit her at the ticket booth and add your name on to her waiting list. When you sign up, you too will receive your art directions and individualized heart kit/s so that you may be on your way to expressing yourself in time for the next initiative.

THE BEACH!

Perhaps one of the real stars of the show is the Sandbanks beach itself. It is the definition of 👌 and it is just steps away from the stage. Families love it, beach bums love it, and rockers love it too. We started this event back in 2014 and we've actually had bands finish their set and jump right in. You can too!!!

INTRODUCING MIA KELLY

Mia Kelly is a singer-songwriter from Gatineau, Quebec who writes and performs in both French and English. Blending folk music with strong influences of blues, pop and Americana, she is making her mark in the Canadian folk music scene at the age of 19. Backed by her performance on guitar or piano and accompanied by foot percussion, Kelly’s foot-stomping sing-a-longs are anchored by her powerful voice that emanates with raw emotion.

She is just releasing her first full-length album “Garden Through the War” is poduced and mixed at Fixed Hinge Studio by Ottawa’s Jim Bryson (Kathleen Edwards, The Tragically Hip) and mastered by Grammy-nominated Phillip Shaw Bova, the record demonstrates maturity in Kelly’s songwriting.

They just recently finished a tour in Europe so they will be finely tuned for Sandbanks Music Festival 2022 on September 17. INTRODUCING MATTHEW BARBER

Matthew is a Toronto-based singer-songwriter, recording and touring artist, producer, and sometimes drummer. He's been making records and touring professionally since 2003, and has a new EP called "No Singing Or Dancing" out in July. Matthew also produces albums for other artists, including the album Gemini by Noah Reid, known as an accomplished musician and actor for his role in the Canadian hit TV Sh*tt's Creek. Some may also know Matt from his work with his sister Jill, winning awards and playing all over Canada!
