What a difference a week makes ! I left the corms sitting bare and brown in their damp compost and came back to sprouters . Picture 1. Butterfly ranunculus corms in 9 cm pots of /perlite/ compost . Picture 2. Ranunculus corms in trays of perlite/ compost 3. Anenome corms in perlite/compost . 4. Sprouted butterflies now in polytunnel bed 5. Sprouted ranuncs sitting happily waiting for a free bed to be ready 6. Planted out sprouted anenomes . A watched corm and all that !

Fantastic talk this evening from the knowledgeable plantsman / nurseryman Simon Sutcliffe about growing for Chelsea . A fascinating insight into the many difficulties of growing to order and timing of plants but also about the way and the designers has changed the emphasis over the years to become so much more sustainable from its use of peat free compost , to repurposing of the show gardens and so much more. He came with trolley loads of many beautiful plants which were snapped up by the members of Benenden Gardening Club . Although a wholesale nursery he maybe doing a Christmas pop up so give him a follow if you don’t already .

Chris has produced an exciting list of semi- hardwood and hardwood options from the variety of plants and shrubs growing in the Blue Hen field including Pittosporum, Philadelphus, Cotinus Hypericum , Hydrangea, Lavatera , Brachyglottis , Guelder Rose opulus Photinia , scented geranium, salvias - the list goes on . You will learn about various ways to propagate, the best medium to use , timings, how to bring in your cuttings and do much more as well as taking away a small haul of cuttings of your choice. On June 12th four amazing gardens will be open in Goudhurst to raise money for Hospice in the Weald . There will be teas coffees , lunches, cakes, talks on willow weaving , beekeeping and a flower demo . Pretty fun day I feel and in a very good cause. More info on @goudhurst_open_gardens2022 .

The Blue Hen Flowers Story

Blue Hen Flowers came about following our eldest son’s marriage when Spring was late, the

agreed to give British grown, local flowers a go and the rest as they say is history. The flowers sold, customers were happy, Nick was happy and I was very happy. Of course anything worth doing means complete involvement and the growing business, in both senses of the word has meant a lot of hard work and hard lessons learnt but I would not have had it any other way,

and the satisfaction I get from producing beautiful blooms, and the friends I have made along the way has been wonderful. Now I sell to a variety of outlets including the wonderful Hartley D**e, Eggs To Apples Farmshop, Astilbe and Sorrel, Benenden’s Community Shop and Cafe and Floral Studio as well as to brides, one-off bouquets, subscribers to monthly flowers and funeral flowers.
