What a chord is
A chord is a combination of two or more notes played simultaneously that create harmony. The first note in a chord is called the root note and determines the chord's name.

The four basic chord types
The four basic types of chords are major, minor, diminished, and augmented. Each type of chord has a different interval above the root note:

Major: A major third and a perfect fifth above the root

Minor: A minor third and a perfect fifth above the root

Diminished: A minor third and a diminished fifth above the root

Augmented: A major third and an augmented fifth above the root

Reading chord symbols
Chord symbols appear above the top staff of written music and have two parts: the root note and the chord quality. The root note is the main note of the chord, and the quality indicates the type of chord.

Identifying chords by ear
A common way to learn to identify chords is to listen to a chord progression and try to play the matching chord on an instrument.
