"Portrait of a woman" by Edgar Degas

(Currently hanging at - from my visit in 2022)

As the son of a wealthy Parisian banking family, Edgar Hilaire Germain Degas originally planned to study law before opting to enter the Ecole des Beaux Arts in 1855. His studies there strongly emphasized traditional drawing skills.

Degas excelled and his extraordinary draftsmanship became a hallmark of his work.

In 1856, Degas traveled extensively throughout Italy where he studied renaissance and classical masterpieces.

As a founding member of the Impressionists, Degas helped to organize the ground-breaking exhibition of 1874, exhibiting 10 of his own pieces in this inaugural show.

While historically labeled an Impressionist, Degas preferred the term "Naturalist". He seldom painted en plein- air. Instead preferring to work from sketches and models. The artist once said: "My art has nothing spontaneous about it, it is all reflection."

His studies frequently convey an element of psychological tension, offering the viewer intimate vignettes of life in late 19th century Paris. Fascinated with the movement of forms through space, Degas often sketched dancers from the wings of theaters, working in pastel and charcoal to capture his subjects with an unrivaled immediacy. Women dancing or merely engaged in the activities of daily life consistently his favored subject. Scholarship is currently divided as to whether Degas was a misogynist or an early feminist but the raging controversy has yet to dampen enthusiasm for the artist's work.

Degas liked photography so he painted similar to how a camera would capture a picture.

Sharing some of our favorite artists that we studied this year. First up,

Jean-Michel Basquiat was a U.S. painter. He first became known for his graffiti (writing or drawing made on a public surface), but later he was known for his paintings. His paintings often feature unusual portraits with scrawled text and symbols.

Before he left school, Basquiat and his classmate Al Diaz began a graffiti campaign. Basquiat had created a character named SAMO©, and the two friends painted messages on walls and on subway trains in New York City. In the late 1970s the art world began to take notice of the graffiti done by Basquiat and other artists. To try to make some money, Basquiat sold hand-painted t-shirts and postcards. In 1978 he sold a postcard to the famous artist Andy Warhol. They would later become friends and sometimes worked together.

Basquiat’s first public exhibition was in the “Times Square Show” in 1980. After the show his career took off. Much of his work addressed his personal anxiety in self-portraits. He also brought in themes and ideas from African, Caribbean, Aztec, and Hispanic cultures. He often mixed “high art” references with images from popular culture, especially cartoons.

Basquiat became a celebrity and a successful artist until his death on August 12, 1988, in New York City. A film of his life, Basquiat, was released in 1996. In 2010 a documentary, Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child, was released. The documentary contains footage of Basquiat in 1985 as well as interviews with the people closest to him.

These writing samples are from the beginning of you. We tend to forget that paragraph writing is a skill that needs to be developed.

The best is the answer on picture two: why did they do it? Because they wanted to.

So in what one might call a revolutionary move, I declared today "quit your job day."

Let me explain. Because students have literally been involved in benchmark testing for weeks, I stopped rotating jobs.

Then on Friday, one girl came up to me and "I don't want to be in charge of the lunch cart." I said okay I will find someone else. I asked and someone immediately took the job.

Today a boy came up to me and said, " I don't want to lead the school pledge." I said okay I will find someone else and again filled the job. QUICKLY.

So then I asked, "Is there anybody that doesn't want to do their job anymore?" At least 15 kids raised their hands.

I said, "I will put a sheet in the back that says 'quit your job' - just write your name and the job you want to leave."

As I sit here, I thought what an incredible skill. What if we realized we actually can quit our job and find another WITHOUT THE GUILT!!!

Just saying.

When I was a little girl, I remember my mom always had a sewing machine out though she never taught us to sew.

For years I wanted to learn how to sew but didn't know where to start. I even got a sewing machine fir my 40th birthday but felt to overwhelmed and gave it to my daughter in law.

When I turned 45, I decided enough was enough and I bought a very basic sewing machine, got on YouTube and taught myself. And then I taught my daughter.

Today, we have a sewing machine out in our little place.

Some views from the back in 2017. Some things that struck me:
1. Art piece 1 created with coffee on sugar cubes
2. Art piece 2 created with found pieces of wood. Also, the work was done while being supported by a donor of the arts
3. Alexander Calder was one of my preschooler's favorite artists to emulate.

One of my favorite parts of teaching art is I get to support students as they let inspiration be the guide of their creativity and not my "template" of what their art "should" look like. I take that into the classroom as well. You must be given the opportunity to express yourself and what better way to practice than through art.
