✌🏼Budget according to your priorities. Decide on how much you can spend and then sit down with your partner to determine what's most important to YOU. No one else. Just y'all!

If you're doing your own fresh flowers on the cake, make sure they are edible! Some flowers will leave behind a bitter sap, some will change the color of the icing it touches, and some are downright poisonous.

Celebrating your wedding in an area that isn't local to you or your guests can be a super fresh and fun escape for everyone! There are also a few more t's to cross and i's to dot along the way; never more true than when it comes to overnight accommodations.

Yesterday we touched briefly on the pro's and con's of courtesy room blocks. Today, we'll dive into contracts that have an attrition clause so you can best determine which fit the needs of you and your guests best.

PRO'S
✅ You can book more rooms at a discounted rate
✅ Your discount may likely be larger
✅ You could earn freebies (complimentary hotel room for the wedding night, etc.) depending on how many rooms your guests 'pick-up' (aka reserve)
✅ You *may have more negotiating power to guarantee specific room types in your block
✅ Your cut-off date is typically a bit closer in to your wedding (avg. 30 days out)

CON'S
❌ YOU are financially liable if not all the contracted rooms are 'picked-up' (booked/reserved) by your guests (don't forget about the attrition, though. See mini-lesson below.)
❌ YOU are financially liable if something happens and you need to lower your guest count, cancel or change the wedding date
❌ YOU ARE FINANCIALLY LIABLE

Mini-Lesson: What is Attrition?
You typically will have an attrition rate listed in the contract - an industry standard is around 80%. What this means is if you contract out 40 room nights at 80% attrition, if 80% of the room nights in your block 'pick-up' - so 32 room nights in this example - then you have satisfied the terms of the contract and are off the hook for having to pay anything more. Those other 8 room nights in your block are simply released into general reservations at your cut-off date. Alternatively, if only 28 room nights pick-up, YOU would be responsible for paying for 4 additional room nights (40x80%=32-28=4). As you can see here, a higher attrition rate (so 90% v. 80%) is actually a good thing for you.

PRO TIP: In your negotiations, try to negotiate for a higher attrition and a complimentary room night per x-number of rooms - it never hurts to ask!

Putting together a list of local accommodations for your wedding guests? Setting aside a block of hotel rooms at a discounted rate may be a great option!

This week we'll dive into the pros and cons of the two main types of hotel room block agreements: courtesy & attrition.

First up - courtesy blocks!

PROs
✅ your guests get a discounted rate locked in for a certain amount of time
✅ you are NOT financially obligated to pay for any rooms in the block that your guests don't "pick-up" (or reserve)
✅a great option if you don’t know how many guests are going to need a room and/or you don’t want to have even the slightest possibility of being stuck paying for extra, empty rooms.
✅ a contract is often required which can work in your favor (e.g. the hotel is selling out fast for a big weekend event - your contracted rooms will be protected until your cut-off date)

CONs
❌Not many hotels offer this type of room block contract/agreement option
❌For those that do, you're typically pretty limited in the number of rooms you can have in your block (10 is fairly standard)
❌If your block fills and you need to add more rooms, you aren't guaranteed the original discounted rate. You aren't even guaranteed any more rooms at all (see daily pro tip below)
❌The 'cut-off date' may be further in advance (e.g. 60 days vs. 30 days in a standard contract with attrition)
❌ Room *types* (queens, doubles, king, etc.) aren't normally guaranteed

Today's Pro Tip: Contract your room block early and encourage your guests to book ASAP (accommodation info is great to include in a save the date and/or on your wedding website). As you get closer to the wedding weekend, the number of available hotel rooms (supply) decreases and the demand increases. This means higher rates or no discounted room blocks/rates at all.

Do I really need to hire a wedding planner?

We get this question all the time. And it’s often assumed because of the nature of what we offer at WedEd that we think wedding planners are unnecessary. That couldn’t be further from the truth. In actuality, and with a background in planning weddings, we know firsthand how vital a planner is.

Our recommendation will always be, if you can afford it, 100% YES hire a wedding planner.

However, we know budget is important and understand that hiring a professional planner isn’t always possible.

And THIS is exactly why WedEd was created. To give everyone the opportunity to have professional help planning so they can actually ENJOY their wedding day, regardless of budget. It is our firm belief that budget shouldn’t - and doesn’t - determine the worth of a couples celebration of love.
