Songtsam Linka Lhasa has 45 guest rooms and overlooks the Lhasa River valley with direct sightlines of the Potala Palace. The suites are beautifully furnished with Tibetan decor, large sofas, and oxygen to help you sleep. The grounds are stone and similar art and colors of the Potala Palace. The lobby is the most stunning architecture and really gives guests a sense of place.

Day 5 We left Shangri-La and enjoyed a rest in the Songtsam Airport Lounge with other VIPs before we boarded a plane to Lhasa. We were welcomed at the airport by our new tour guide and driver and had the warmest welcome at Songtsam Linka Lhasa. Their ginger milk tea gives me cravings to this day.

Day 4 brought us to the largest Tibetan Buddhist Monastery in Yunnan Province. Also known as “Little Potala Palace”, it is the most important monastery in Southwest China. I went for a morning hike to the lookout prayer bluff, we toured the Monastery, and then I hiked around the lake to take in a different view.

The Songtsam Linka Shangri-La is a resort with so much to do onsite. Art gallery, museum, painting studio, horse back riding, archery, an astronomer’s dream come true star gazing room, and so much more. Our group decided took an incense making class and took home our crafts.

Sitting 10,826 feet above sea level, the Songtsam Linka Shangri-La will quite literally take your breath away. Don’t worry, guestrooms are equipped with oxygen for those who do not adjust quickly. My suite was spacious, comfortable, and the views of the Songzanlin Monastery, aka Little Potala Palace, were divine.

After a post-hike lunch, we continued our road trip to Shangri-La. The lakes are a destination for TikTok youth to get their photos in their cultural costumes and their scooter caused plenty of traffic. Well, them and the Yaks. Angela of Songtsam took us to Napa lake and taught us about how the herdsmen use the fields and lakes for their cattle.

Day 3: Time to begin the Tibetan Plateau Road Trip! We left Songtsam Lodge Lijiang and drove to Tiger Leaping Gorge. Names one of the Top 10 most famous hiking trails in the world, this trail is a scenic canyon hike high above the Jinsha River. The perfect exercise in the middle of a road trip!

A rainy afternoon brought us the Wenfeng Temple, the only temple in NW Yunnan where monks can meditate for over 3 years. We learned about the art, culture, and religion for the region and were the only guests visiting. Such a great experience!

Day 1: Our morning started with a hearty breakfast of Chinese, Tibetan, and Western choices. Our amazing tour guide, Angela, picked us up for a tour of Old Town Lijiang. This 13th century old town twists and turn with alleys and shops of all kinds. We enjoyed Rose Buns and purchased tea from the Yunnan region. We learned about Peter Goullart, author of Forbidden City, who introduced Yunnan to the west and became the doctor of the city. Umbrella Alley was our favorite spot along with every other tourist in Old Town. The views of Jade Snow Mountain were gorgeous! Next stop: our first monastery. Stay tuned.

We have finally arrived at Songtsam Lijiang Lodge, just 40 minutes from Lijiang Sanyi Airport. Our tour guide has taught us about the demographics of the region and has amazing hikes scheduled for the next 2 days. We were welcomed with rose tea, cookies, and home made slippers. Will post the bird call from my balcony after tea time.
