Featured Performer: Christy Vanden at this year's Running Wild Retreat!

Born to travelling musician parents, Christy spent her life roaming from BC to Baja California and Mexico in a ramshackle VW van. From age 7, Christy was mentored by her father who inspired her to play the guitar while her mother and sister Amanda taught her to sing. Through high school, Christy kept her music private. She led a busy college life with a focus on Liberal Studies and Archeology.

Christy met Brodie Dawson (2014 VIMA Vocalist of the Year) by chance at Long and McQuade in Courtenay. While showcasing Christy in her band as guitarist for the summer of 2014 – they played Sunfest Country Music Festival’s main stage in Duncan. In 2015, Brodie and Christy recorded Brodie’s song “All This Time”, which was nominated in the 2015 Vancouver Island Music Awards for Roots/Blues Recording of the Year. Brodie and Christy began touring with Tracy Riley of Yellowknife, calling themselves “She Could Be Trouble”. Between 2015 and 2016, She could be trouble toured BC and Alberta, resulting in a live release CD titled “Nineteen Hours”, the album earning the name from the number of hours it took for them to record 13 tracks over 2 days. “She Could Be Trouble” was nominated at the 2016 Vancouver Island Music Awards for Group of the Year, and they were also accepted into the first round of Juno Nominations for 2017.

After the mutual dissolution of the band, Christy moved to Vancouver with her partner where she is finding her place in music and hopes to improve her art and deepen her songwriting. Her solo album, drafted as “Unexpected Road”, will be released later in the year…

Featured Workshop: West Coast Swing

West Coast Swing is a regional variation of Lindy Hop that was popular in the 1940s along the West Coast. By 1960, it incorporated with mainstream Swing circles and in 1988, it was announced as the Official State Dance of California.

West Coast swing has been referred to as a “living dance” due to its constant evolution with music trends over the decades. It is one of the most innovative dance genres because it allows the dancer a lot of freedom of expression since it is based on two count rhythm units. It is considered one of the most improvisational of all partnered dances and also one of the most versatile. Also, it is unique as a dance genre due to its form of "call and response" between the "Lead" and "Follow" creating a "dialogue" between the dancers.

Your instructor: Wanda Roberts

Wanda has been dancing for 7 years, although it has been a love of hers since she could remember. Originally taking lessons as a Follow for 2 years, she began attending dance conventions in Vancouver and Seattle. Due to breaking her foot in an unfortunate accident, she was forced to take a break from dance, but then felt the strong passion to dance again, and rejoined the Swing Dance Community as a Full-time Lead. Wanda has competed in dance competitions in Vancouver, Seattle and Portland, and has participated in several workshop weekends with amazing dancers. She is a full member of the BC Swing Dance Club, and a member of the Board of Directors.

For the past 7 months, Wanda has been training and studying to complete Swing Literacy Training so she can continue to share her love for this art form by teachings others to dance.

“I LOVE dance! Since I was a kid, I've always felt music was a way to express feelings without words, without judgement. Partner dancing has always been one of the most beautiful ways to communicate. Having a conversation with others set to music, and just full of joy is what brings me to it. I've never felt out of place, or like I didn't belong in the dance community. I finally found ‘my people’ through dance. My number one goal in every single dance I dance is to have a good 3 minutes, and that's really what it's all about. Sharing the joy of 3 minutes with another person... and when you find a partner who can ‘hear’ you, it can be anything from fun and carefree, to heartbreaking and storytelling.”

Wanda will be instructing our West Coast Swing Workshop at the Running Wild Campout in Birken under the Main Tent on Sunday July 2nd from 3pm – 4pm. She will be also be working and participating at the Sweet Side of Swing Comprehensive Learning Weekend on June 22-25 as the Volunteer Coordinator and Hospitality Co-Coordinator.

Below is a video Wanda would personally wanted to share with everyone: This is Samantha Buckwalter and Jennifer Deluca dancing. Both were fellow dancers and participants in several workshops that Wanda herself had attended. The dance below was not practiced or choreographed, but was filmed at a competition and was completely improvised. Enjoy!
