Poinsettias have become a holiday favorite BUT the amaryllis is my bloom of choice for setting the scene for winter celebrations. Amaryllis make for a more unique statement, especially this “candy cane”variety with their strong stems and distinctive red and white petals.
The amaryllis has its origin story in Ancient Greece. The nymph Amaryllis, seeking to win the heart of a handsome but aloof shepherd, takes advice from the Oracle to visit his house each day and pierce her heart with a golden arrow. On the 30th day (girlfriend was determined!) the drops of blood from her heart turn to beautiful flowers wherever they touch the ground, and that finally wins over the shepherd’s affection.❤️ The amaryllis has since come to symbolize love, beauty and determination, making it a perfect floral for wintertime.
