We've been hiding away like my bamboo frog from the installation!
We haven't disappeared or anything, we have been EXTREMELY busy! The installation was a challenge this time as I incorporated more sustainable and environmentally friendly mediums, plus those bloody warm days in a greenhouse does not agree with fresh flowers 😭

But!
On Sunday, we will be at the Winbourne Open Day with fresh flowers, succulent arrangements, dried arrangements, handmade papers, and a bright bushy tail 🤣

Bring your smiles, being your cards 💳 and get ready for an epic day!

So much effort was put into it, and seeing the spectators get excited for their representation was so beautiful!

Australian Birth Month Flowers - JULY

Adenanthos or Woolly Bush

This is a shrub native to the coast of Western Australia. It looks deceiving with its pointed texture, but it is so soft and adds softness to box arrangements and table arrangements. It is gorgeous and comes in a variety of greens, even throwing in the odd red/orange!
I love Woolly Bush and whenever I am at Bunnings Warehouse Australia and I see one, I HAVE TO TOUCH IT!

Plant of the Month - JULY
Syngonium

Syngonium are native to Mexico, The West Indies, Central and South America. They are evergreens and can grow 20m long. They can also form long shoots that can creep along the ground or climb trees. Basically, If you have watched Jurassic Park, you have seen a syngonium. Majority of the trees in that movie are COVERED in this amazing plant! They have distinct arrowhead leaves that can come in some amazing colours, such as pinks, greens, and variegated.

Here are the Winter Why Not's!

Dahlia - Dahlia are tubers. Now these flowers are coming out of their season during Winter but can still be available from certain growers. Protea Hill dabbles in dahlias, and she has just brought up and begun drying all of her tubers for next season. There are still a few available at market, but they may not be as diverse.

Dried flowers and foliage - Winter is the season before rebirth, why not opt for dried?

How can my garden be sustainable?

Opt for natural, opt for compostable, opt for recyclable! Use your cardboard boxes to smother weeds, invest in a home compost system, and get a worm farm! Research your fertilisers and natural pest control! Look into your area's ecosystem and use your plants to attract natural predators. Start a vegetable swap! Got too much silverbeet, ask your neighbours! The family we are living with now use silverbeet in their lasagna, like an extra layer! It is DELICIOUS! Make an extra lasagna for your daycare director, honestly, gardening is about community, use it!

Winter Focal flowers - these are the prizes!

Camellia - This is an all-year foliage, plus a cut flower. I'm gonna be honest, I am not a fan of camellia flowers due to the smell, but I'd make an exception for my Brides! There are pinks, yellows, whites, creams, reds. They're delicate and open beautifully.

Daffodils - Daffodils are out! All getting ready for Spring! They begin blossoming towards the end of winter. They're bright and cheerful and show that Spring is around the corner!

Hellebore - The Winter Rose. A sought-after wedding floral that adds sophistication and elegance. They can be broody or calming.

Ornamental Kale - Good old kale made it onto the list. Now, you could have the edible kind, but let's look at the ornamental kale. Purples, pinks, greens, and whites that are HUGE and texturally stunning! just remember to change the water OFTEN

Poppy - Poppies represent sleep, peace, and death. It is now a symbol of war remembrance.

Tulip - Tulips are bulb flowers. They Grow from their tips, rather than from their base. This means they need to be supported and planned, in a way. Tulips need to be trimmed regularly if they are chosen as your cut flower of choice. They come in many colours and varieties these days. From parrot feather, to triples, they are popping up this time of year!

Hydrangea - These flowers are thirsty mo-fo’s! They love a good, fresh drink, especially after a decent trim. These guys come in an array of colours, depending on PH and dye option. Did you know that you can also grow hydrangea plants from your cut flowers? I did an experiment a number of years ago to see what would regrow from stems and cuttings. After being in water and being refreshed, the hydrangea stem grew roots!

Phalaenopsis - Phalaenopsis orchids are big at the moment and their flowers are mind blowing, especially with all the ways to dye them. They are elegant and showstopping.

How can I reduce my footprint when it comes to purchasing flowers?

Now, you can reduce your footprint when you purchase flowers, either shop flowers, wedding flowers, or event flowers. Wanna know how? SHOP LOCAL! Ask your florist what is Australian grown, ask your florist if they know local growers they can purchase from. Do your research! Shop seasonally, don’t import. Importation means planes and freight, that means more kilometres! ‘Grown not Flown’ is a new movement in Australia, well not new, but it is now taking off. They showcase and invest in local growers rather than flown products. This comes back into our economy as well, allows our growers to expand and can open up a supply and demand handshake! Let’s go Local Y’all!

Sustainability- How does this work in the florist industry?

I have touched on this many times, but why not a refresher?!
How can your event or wedding be sustainable in its flower choices? What can be opted out? What can be opted in? Do I still have a choice?

These are valid questions, and it will always be a good idea to talk to your designer and have questions ready, as well as possible options.
Now, what does sustainability mean? It is reducing waste, using products that don't impact the planet in a negative way, and keeps the earth a little greener! Bit rich coming from a florist who chops flowers 😅
These sustainability choices could be:
opting for foam free arrangements - this could mean a possible aesthetic shift.
choosing seasonally available flowers
enquiring about locally and Australian grown flowers
volunteering to dispose of the soft plastics that may be used
using all natural and foraged vessels

There are so many ways to make your event or wedding more sustainable through the flowers you use! Always check with your florist of ways they are reducing their impact :)

Let's start with the fillers!
These are the flowers that fill the spaces between the focal flowers or can be a bouquet by themselves! Honestly, It is up to you!

Berzelia is texturally amazing and eye catching! Small pompoms on the end of spiky stems. They come in various colours, green ends with red stems, or beige. They are awesome. I love adding them to arrangements!

Blushing Brides are Native to South Africa, but they love our climate as well! These small tufts of flowers are so beautiful closed or open! They come in white, pinks, and creams and are simply stunning 😍

Teasel, Now, this one is basically thistle, or sea holly. I love these guys and the amazing visual they have and bring to bouquets and arrangements, plus they are everlasting. Their colour scheme matches more palettes because of their subtle blue green glow, and when dried the brown and texture is phenomenal. They are truly beautiful! If you wanna get in my good books, just bring me a bouquet of these!!

Babies Breath, now babies breath is one of those flower fillers that are available all year round, but their main season in winter and look amazing adorning a bride's head for her winter wedding. Not only fresh, but dried, these flowers look and feel amazing. They can be used for home decor, as tokens, or even as garlands.

Wheat, why not try a dried wildflower bouquet or ask for some extra texture? Wheat is your dude! They feel awesome and they provide a rustic look to your arrangements and bouquets. Having a backyard wedding? Why not have wheat buttonholes? They also look dashing with babies breath and dried lavender!

Australian Flower of the Month - JUNE

Happy Wanderer / Purple Coral Pea

This plant, Scientifically known as Hardenbergia violacea, is native to Australia from Tasmania to Queensland. It is known as the Happy Wanderer, Lilac Vine, and Purple Coral Pea. It gets its names from its vigorous wine growth and amazing purple flowers.
It is also an Evergreen climber vine!
It is the Spirit of Winter when it is in bloom!

Plant of the Month - JUNE

The Umbrella Plant

There are two different genera of umbrella plants - Schefflera and Cyperus. They have major differences. The Schefflera have long, shiny, oval leaves that droop from a central stalk, resembling an umbrella. These are native to Asia and Australia. The Cyperus genera are sedges that have grass-like stems and leaves that radiate from the top, resembling an umbrella shape! They are native to the east coast of Africa and tropical zones.
How amazing is that?! I personally love the Schefflera because they are so interesting to look at and they make an amazing statement plant. The Cyperus can be used in floral arrangements and add texture and a tropical feel.

Did you know that death in flowers can be transferred?
If you don't remove the wilted or dead flowers in an arrangement, the other flowers will die off faster. When certain flowers or foliage die, they become soggy and can leave brown spots on other flowers and/or foliage, others can become dry, but make the water murky.
Remove dead and wilting flowers/foliage to keep the life span of your other flowers!

Okay, so we covered that foliage should be removed from the base of arrangements to make sure the water stays fresh, and mould doesn't grow, BUT YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE THE STEMS ARE IN THE WATER.

It's okay, you aren't the only one wondering why that one flower dies before the rest. Please make sure you check your stems are submerged when changing your vase water

Add a fresh cup of water every 2nd to 3rd day. This will keep them drinking and stop the foam from drying out.
Try to add the water right in the centre of the arrangement, this will be where the most foam will be, making it less of a mess!
