As Black people, we are bombarded by instances of racism every day: Images of police and self-deputized citizens killing Black people. Hospitals shutting down in our communities. Negative stereotypes in media, microaggressions at work, suspicious treatment by store clerks and neighbors. All based on the color of our skin.
These occurrences leave mental and emotional injuries, known as racial trauma, that can lead to anxiety and depression. The effects of daily discrimination also cause long-term physical harm. They eat away at our bodies, manifesting as heart disease, headaches, gastrointestinal issues, and other ailments.
But racial trauma is not formally recognized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the manual used by health care experts to diagnose mental health disorders, meaning there’s no official symptoms or guidance on how to treat them.

On July 6th, at approximately 1:21 am, Sonya Massey, a 36-year-old Black woman from Springfield, Illinois, was tragically murdered in her own home after calling 911. Concerned about a possible intruder, Sonya did what anyone would do—she reached out to the authorities for protection. However, Deputy Sean Grayson arrived and ended up shooting her. Despite her attempts to comply with his instructions, the deputy’s actions resulted in Sonya being killed.
Grayson has since been indicted on charges of first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and official misconduct.
His history of misconduct in the military and various law enforcement positions makes you wonder why he was in position to commit this heinous crime.

US economist Jeffery Sachs challenged the West to put the mirror to its face at the UN Food Systems Pre-Summit in 2021. When the imperialist powers were not colonising Africans who had systems of governance in place, they were plundering Africa’s precious resources, assassinating political figures and, fuelling wars, stifling the continent’s ability to conduct its affairs. Sachs said Africans continue to be exploited and denied their rights recognised under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the United Nations in 1948. He mentioned Belgium’s brutal occupation that k*lled more than 10 million Congolese and the Belgian/British/US-led assassination of the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s first democratically elected leader, Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba (1925-61).
