On the Up an Up!

I was thrilled at the opportunity to do this student's graduation photo. She wanted it taken at the Guelph University Gryphon statue. When I met her I mentioned that this is a very special time in her life and that she should present this image as a visual testament to her achievement. Because if you just stash it on your phone it will lose its significance and then get buried with thousands of pictures. My suggestion was to enjoy it as a wall portrait or save a set of images in a folio box. These memories could be passed down to her children's grandchildren. On meeting them I knew she was very excited to do this shoot. My first thought was I can't wait to capture the emotions you're showing...and what kind of photos have you dreamed of having? She welled up with excitement and enthusiasm; her hero shot was being photographed sitting on top of the Gryphon! She was willing to scale this slippery bass mountain so she could proudly display what must have felt like an eternity of hard work, sweat, and tears to symbolize one of her biggest life's achievements. But she was determined and that determination culminated with these memories.

Photography that expressed from the heart of inspired passion.

At the heart of my photography I want my subjects to see not only how elegant and beautiful they already look but through posing and guiding that will take them far beyond there expectations, this is my challenge. A pose can be good, an expression with emotion can be great. If you can put both together then it becomes the most beautiful and meaningful photo you can ever imagine. I will always be inspired to express this through my experience, vision, and years of photographic experience. I could go on forever about all the emotional happy accidents, and connotations of expressions a good image could make, but I would like to stop here, and really like my work to do the talking.

I am drawn to the stimulation of imagery using light, shade, texture, background and foreground. Combining these elements with people and the use of lighting either natural or added combined with posing, direction. The exciting thing is the spontaneous nature of finding a serendipitous outcome which is exciting. These are some of the many things that inspire me like all of us who are drawn to visual art.
