Former ‘on air’ DJ on the late great Belfast pirate radio station Energy106FM. Hosting the ‘Club Energy’ show every Saturday Night from 1999 to 2006, playing all the biggest dance anthems and breaking new tracks direct from the record labels.

First NI DJ to be featured on a legal CD mix album ‘Energy….the album’ sold in HMV & Virgin. Previous resident DJ at Calico Jacks, Cafe Ceol & Betty Blacks, and main host alongside his mentor Lawerance John at the Dundonald Ice Bowl ‘Teen Energy’ events!

Folks, thank you all so much for your kind words and encouragement, and also the stories. It was very nice to read your comments. I agree with all those that said never say never, I’m not saying never right now, I’m more saying I’m happy not to DJ. Something I thought I’d NEVER say. It’s cause I’m happy with the quizzes and bingo. Tonight was a full house at the bingo and it was such an electric atmosphere! The interactions between the crowd and I had me in stitches at time. Too many innuendos 🤣

But like I said, if the right venue/night comes along I’ll get back into it again, but absolutely no worries if it never happens.

To hang up the headphones or not? 🧐

At the rip old age of 55 the thought has crossed my mind. I mean how long can one actually continue to DJ? When’s the cut off point? Can I really be in my 60’s DJing to people a third my age?! I’ve had a good run, 36 years to be precise. It’s been an absolute blast and I’d recommend the career to anyone who’s bold enough to lift a microphone and have genuine banter and laughs with folk. If I could go back I wouldn’t change a thing.

So why these thoughts? I’m currently out four nights a week, and not one of them is a DJ gig. Can I actually call myself ‘DJ’ Danny Dee anymore lol 😂 I’m technically now just Danny Dee.

I did a gig in Belfast last night, and for some reason I mistakenly thought it was a shot at a new weekly Saturday Night residency. It’s my fault, I picked it up wrong from my friend who got me the gig. It was kind of him to get me it, and totally my fault for reading more into it. It was for a private party, and I don’t do private parties. I find them stressful, and last night was no different. I prefer weekly residencies where I can build up relationships with regulars and get the craic going. Start friendships almost, create a friendly atmosphere and get to know the punters and the variety of music they like etc. A private party is nothing like that, I feel I’ve got to be psychic and know exactly what the group’s favourite music is and play just that from start to finish. Play one wrong song and you get ‘the looks’ 👀 It’s uncomfortable, and just not enjoyable for me. This is just how I feel. Probably mostly in part to me getting on in the years now. Flippin fuddy duddy 😆

So for now, I think I’ll hang up my trusted 30 year old Sennheiser HD-25 headphones. Unless another Calico Jacks or Betty Blacks type party bar wants me. That’s where I feel at home, playing requests and making people happy. God it was good at times. But if it’s not meant to be, to be honest, that’s ok. I very much enjoy doing my Pub Quizzes and Bingo Nights. The relaxed atmosphere with me just walking around talking to people and sometimes playing party games with them is very enjoyable, and the craic and the jokes to be had mean lots of laughs and giggles. I’ve cried with laughter at times as some of the folks are seriously funny. I’m happy with the direction my career has taken. It suits me and my outward sometimes a little crazy personality. I’ve my Dad to thank for that 🥰
