I’m geeking out about tomorrow’s “LATINOS IN THE HOUSE” event. Many of you wouldn’t understand. Before I was a DJ, I was a music fan. I was the sponge that studied and absorbed the dance culture. Growing up in Uptown/Edgewater as a 10 year old I was surrounded by now legendary dance venues, Coconuts on Sheridan, Bananas on Broadway, East Palace on Sheridan, Coconuts on Broadway, AKA on Broadway, Uptown Theatre, Riviera Theatre, Rainbo, etc. Additionally, there were all ages dance parties held at Banquet Halls. These parties were hosted by the Disco Allstars, Sunset Mobile Disco, Moonlight Traveling Disco, etc. The dance movement was alive, fresh, and exciting. The promotional poster boards were posted up and down the streets. I couldn’t wait to find out where the next party would be held and who were the featured DJs. These streets were the foundation to my musical education. Tomorrows event will feature many of the key figures that made up the scene.
I'm happy to see my childhood idols and hometown heros receive the recognition they deserve for their contributions to this culture. Equally on behalf of Frank(RIP), I'm happy to be recognized for our small contributions to this music we loved.
I'm spinning at the afterset. Come on out to join us. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to share some of the names, but Liz Torres is expected to make an appearance. Equally, there will be a dance exhibit from some of the dancers from back in the day.
I was blessed to see the Culitos and Imported Taste perform at the Rainbo back in the day. Going to be a great one.
