I thank God that attitudes are shifting in our culture and community.

Yes we’re all aware that culturally, Lohri was traditionally a celebration for the Birth of a baby Boy within the last 12 months. The arrival of a male heralded unlimited jubilation and celebrations involving dancing and singing amongst family and friends. A wave of relief and almost ego-like pride would also be felt by the family as they walked around the villages and towns distributing sweet treats to honour and celebrate the birth of their heir and successor. The family name and legacy would continue with great hopes and aspirations for this little boy.

Switch then to the birth of a baby Girl…………… Wow…..

Traditionally, it could not be more different for some families.

‘Nevermind’ ‘Maybe next time’ ‘Maybe God didn’t want you to have a boy this time round’ ‘It’s God’s Will’

These are just some of the superficial reassurances offered by the elders and the crazy thing is, mostly by the elder ladies in the family and circle of friends!

There’s so much more I could go into about this issue and I think I will…….. we NEED to.

But people’s thinking has changed and we’re seeing more and more families booking us to DJ and entertain for their Daughter’s and Granddaughter’s Lohri celebrations.

However, we can’t sugar-coat things. The reality is that for SOME families, gender inequality still exists, however subtle the differences may be when a baby Girl is born. It’s heartbreaking. But only speaking about it will help to change things. We all have a part to play in this issue.

Ask questions - don’t be afraid to.

Speak to those around us about it and get their views and perspectives

Speak to WOMEN about their experiences

Speak to MEN about THEIR experiences

It may surprise you…………….

The fact of the matter is that the birth of a beautiful baby Girl should be seen and felt as equally joyous and a blessing as the birth of a beautiful baby Boy.

Gender equality please 🙏

There are so many religious, cultural and seasonal reasons why Lohri is celebrated amongst the Sikh & Hindu community in the Northern regions in India.
