A LOOK BACK IN TIME...

Trilobyte has been an alternative DJ, club night promoter, and musician since starting out in the mid nineties. It has been so long ago now that I cannot remember the specific date when I did my first bit of DJ’ing, but it all started when DJ Drone, who was one of the resident DJ’s of Contamination Club at the original Edwards No: 8 venue, in Birmingham (UK), would let me spin a few discs on occasion which then set me on the road to becoming a DJ. Here is a run down on my past work experiences:

THE LEGENDARY JB’s NIGHTCLUB YEARS

JB’s Nightclub was in my hometown of Dudley, West Midlands, and it was at one point the UK’s longest running live venue. Since I was a teenager I had been coming to this venue for nights out and seeing some awesome bands. It was around 2001/2002 that I started working at the venue as a resident weekly Thursday night DJ and where I would also have the chance to run my own nights (see further below). It was a pleasure of working just over 9 happy years here. Unfortunately, in January 2011 JB’s closed it’s doors for good due to the club going into administration, but it was a pleasure to DJ at the final night and give it the send off that it needed! When not DJ’ing here you could sometimes find me working behind the bar or helping out in some capacity, be it moving equipment or keeping the place tidy. Occasionally early on Thursday nights after I had my DJ equipment set up I would go through and listen to the demo CD’s in the office which were sent in from prospective bands that wanted to perform at the venue and would make a note of those that sounded worthy in the big gig bookings book. I will cherish and hold this place dear to my heart due to all the friends and good times it brought not only me, but so many others and the bands that it hosted, where some of them also went on to found fame! U2, The Pretenders and The Cure are all bands which gigged here before they hit the big time, not forgetting to mention the three leading local bands of the so-called Stourbridge music scene of the early 1990s, Pop Will Eat Itself, The Wonder Stuff and Ned's Atomic Dustbin, all cite the venue as a major influence over their early careers. I owe so much to Sam (Colin Jukes) for everything he helped me with over all the years that I worked there, he is and always will be a legend! FUNERAL NATION (FOR A DEAD GENERATION)

Funeral Nation was a monthly Goth night that myself and good friend Katie Pullinger put together back in 2003 at JB’s nightclub where we were currently working at the time. After a discussion after hours in the club one night we came to the conclusion that our local town had nothing to offer the Goth scene, most people had to travel to Wolverhampton or Birmingham for a dark night out. Having contacts with various bands due to being on the gigging circuit myself was also in our favor, so we decided to put our heads together and start the project. The night ran for 3 years at the JB’s venue and was revived in 2016 where it had a further 3 year run in Birmingham city center at the Steampunk Bar COGS before it finally moved to the legendary Costermongers. In Sept 2018 the night was put into suspended animation due to me moving to the the US. Back in March 2020 a reunion event was organized and held the Costermongers venue. SYNTHETIK TECHNO NIGHT

Synthetik was a short lived once a month Techno night that myself and a few other DJ friends tried out on a mid week once a month basis at JB’s Nightclub. For a mid week event it did not pull the numbers we wanted so we decided to shelve the idea. DEATH MACHINE - INDUSTRIAL/ GOTH NIGHT

Death Machine ran as a monthly event from around 1999 until sometime in 2002 and was Birmingham’s premier Goth Alt night at that time after Contamination Club ceased at Edwards No: 8. BANDS AND MUSIC PROJECT’S

Besides the DJ’ing over the years I have also been in numerous bands/music projects and have got to play at some pretty awesome festivals and venues across Europe with an array of artists on the alt music scene. I was an original member of V2A from the outset back when first formed in 2002 and was an active member for 10 years. Our debut show was at the Gothic Industrial Party in Essen (DE) shortly followed by the legendary Wave Gotik Treffen Festival in Leipzig (DE). Sugarfiend was a side project of various band members and our debut gig was supporting Fields of the Nephilim’s side project Last Rites, at the Dawnrazer Weekend Festival, and what a night to remember! Unfortunately our time was short lived together but a reunion was had on my 40th birthday, where with no rehearsal we slayed the stage and gelled as we always did. The bands I have performed in include:
V2A - Hard EBM/ Industrial (Percussion)
Sugarfiend - Gothic Rock (Percussion)
Nex Sepulchum - Folk Metal (Percussion)
EVP - Electro Cheese (Vocals/ Programming/ Mixing)
Nerveflower - Ambient (Programming/ Mixing)
Azrael - Rock (Vocals)

ROADIE WORK

Back in early 2000 I was roadie for the new (at that time) and upcoming Industrial band Sulpher. It was a pleasure to be involved helping out with their concerts, lugging gear, setting up and breaking down, operating the lighting and smoke machine at shows, and fixing any issues on stage if need be whilst they played, although Rob would sometimes ‘make’ an issue just so he could try and jump on me when I came out to sort it, this became a bit of an in joke with us all. I have a thank you in their first album ‘Spray’ for all my efforts which was really appreciated and an honor, the name they used was ‘Mohawk Matt’ due to my Taxi driver style hair cut at the time. TELEVISION

I have taken part in some T.V. work as an extra/actor where I portrayed the role of a policeman in a historic film documentary, The Battle of Orgreave. It aired on Channel 4 back in October 2002 and was part of a Tate Britain exhibition in 2015. I enjoyed doing this line of work and would love to do again if the chance arises.
