Tomorrow the Summer Solstice is at 3:42am - an hour before the sun rises in London.
Druid Chris Parks reminds us that Solstice isn’t just the unique time of our longest day - it’s a unique place; the northernmost point at which the sun will rise and set each year; our maximum stretch.

Today many of us are travelling west to Wasing Forest in our annual pilgrimage; the ancient woods and lake and community are so magical, and I know no better way to honour this moment than to spend the day there, and sit in song around the campfire, and circle together at dawn.

As we gear up for Wild West & steep ourselves in research, I’m reading Dee Brown’s heart-wrenching “Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee”, which reminds us how deeply connected the Native Americans were to the seasons and land, and we salute their custodianship and reverence, especially at that time when the rampaging iron horses of the railroads brought with them Railway Time - that deeply-disembodied abstraction, and erasure of geography and lived experience.

In Canada, Summer Solstice has been annually celebrated as National Indigenous Peoples Day since 1996 - an epicentre to its broader celebration of June as National Indigenous History Month.

Here’s to the sun and the land; remembrance, growth and renewal - and a glorious start to summer; please come say hi if you’re at Wasing!
