Knowing I was having a bad week, my buddy Sly Hondo over at imaginary cable access channel WSTV,, dropped off a couple of oddities he picked up for me at the horror convention a couple weeks ago!

The Halloween spirit is upon us at Doc's Corner. But, luckily for us, there was a look back at the good old days. As always, you can find these and thousands of other comic reviews from over the years at the Graham Crackers Comics website under the Blog tab. Let's get started ...

DC HORROR PRESENTS #1

Tis the season for spooky tales and horrible horrors. And with an all star celebrity roster onboard including actor David Dastmalchian, fresh off his award winning preformance in Late Night With the Devil movie and the Dragula Boulet Brothers, you'd think it would be a take no prisoners scarefest. But truth be told, while the stories are entertaining, I wasn't really all that scared. And while we've got zombie amazons and reanimated boyfriends, along with a few jumpscares, it didn't give me the creeps. Now and arguement can be made that in today's society, we have become numb to horror and I can't argue that. I will admit that the Wonder Woman story did make me sad though. And, perhaps, a little annoyed as the villain behind it never gets caught or faces any punishment. Still, it's always nice to see, celebrities making an effort in other media. 7 out of 10.

HACK/SLASH BODY BAGS #1

Image Comics is at it again but not being a regular reader of Body Bags, I was slightly confused at first but quickly caught up as I kept reading. Cassandra and Vlad have a history of teaming up with other horror characters, so this one is a no-brainer. Having the two enter into the town of Terminus to hunt down the slasher Edgelord makes perfect sense. And while Cassie is her usual annoyed self, Vlad notes ... "it is city of the Body Baggers". A nice start to the blending of character universes. 7 out of 10.

GODZILLA'S MONSTERPIECE THEATRE #1

You know, I always get annoyed with IDW when they introduce a new Godzilla title that strays so far outside Toho's Kaiju Universe. The King of the Monsters has been around since 1954 and he and the other inhabitants of the kaiju world deserve a little respect. Having Godzilla show up in stories featuring the Power Ranges or worse a gang of scateboarders really makes you wonder what was Toho thinking when they let IDW use the rights to the characters. IDW started out strong with several mini-series that stuck with stories from the good old days. So to see that not only is IDW messing with Godzilla but also with several noted works of fiction is really too much. And while writer/artist Tom Scioli does keep the initial Great Gatsby story somewhat close to the novel (except that Godzilla shows up and that Jay Gatsby is a member of G-Force) it cannot help but make me ask the question, Why? And while it does seem like an intriguing story exercise, I'm not seeing the value. 4 out of 10.

HAWKMAN #4 FACSIMILE EDITION

Finally, a comic that I can thoroughly enjoy. Unfortunately, I had to go back 60 years to find it. But oh what a find! Murphy Anderson classic art and Gardner Fox behind the script, how could you lose? And more importantly, these were the halcyon days of DC Comics. Creativity just oozed out of every office and chances were be taken. Still coming up with modern versions of the great Golden Age heroes, the first story brings us the first appearance of the daughter of former Action Comics mainstay Zatara the Magician. And while she would magically vanish at the end of the story, Gardner Fox wasn't done with his new creation. Zatanna would reappear in Atom #19, Green Lantern #42, and in a Elongated Man backup story in Detective Comics #355. And when the search for her father finally came to an end in Justice League of America #51, it was written in that she had also appeared with Batman in Detective Comics #336 even if no one knew it. A 6 part cross over story that no one realized was happening! Now that is genius! And it all started here! Simply amazing! 10 out of 10.

A late night was had by all but luckily Doc's Corner stays open late for me. This week's review are an interesting mashup of old and new. So let's get started ...

CRYPT OF SHADOWS #1 MARVEL COMICS

Another classic 1970's Marvel horror title gets a brief resurgence in this one off that proves that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still trying to force it's way into it's comic-verse. In short tales narrated by Agatha (oh nope, I'm sorry) Lady Harkness, who has suddenly gone from being the elderly white haired old crone who nannied Franklin Richards over in the original Fantastic Four title, to an alluring thigh high boot wearing 'Magical Futurist' living on another planet? Then we get three tales, most of which have direct Cinematic ties as we take a visit to WandaVision world where writer Chris Condon manages to keep a fair blend of the Scarlet Witch comic mixed in. And with the future Kraven the Hunter and Blade movies on the horizon, the two meet up with the Werewolf By Night (who's own one and done tv special garned favorable ratings) to do battle with some vampires. Finally finishing off with a story of ecological disaster featuring the Man-Thing and the Sub-Mariner (who have recently made appearance in the MCU). Of the three writer Benjamin Percy's tale starring Man-Thing is the most creative. The problem here is that all of the writers and artists do a really good job with the respective stories. Now, whether you are a believer in the 'Loss of Copyright Status' conspiracy theory or the 'Let's Keep Pushing the Interest In the MCU Up' conspiracy theory, (by the way, I believe this one-shot falls into both camps) this is not a bad little one-shot. 7 out of 10.

WONDER WOMAN #14 DC COMICS

When writer Tom King hits his mark, he really shows his understanding of the source materials and backrounds. With Steve Trevor dead (again!), Diana has gone to mourn and can't be found. While Wonder Woman fans for decades have argued over their relationship, this one off break in the current story gives the perfect definition of what they mean to each other. With cameos from the Wonder Girls, Batman and Superman, this story really exemplifies all of the humanity behind these characters. Clark and Bruce are suitably worried and aggrivated by their inability to help. The Wonder Girls are logical and point out that Diana just needs some alone time. And the scenes between Steve and Diana are absolutely heartbreaking. But the best part of the story featuring the super-villains who realize that this killing has doomed them all and all they can do is wait for Wonder Woman to reappear and totally destroy them. Resigned to their fates, they play pool, meditate, etc. Everyone just waiting for the other shoe to drop. And I won't spoil the final page but it's pretty cool. 10 out of 10.

RISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS #7 FACSIMILE EDITION

Yep, this was the big one. Oh sure, dozens of minor characters had fallen to the big white energy wall but this one grabbed readers by the throat and made them cry. And while there are a few logistical issue with this one, this is the issue that showed DC wasn't messing around any more. As Kara Zor-El heroicly sacrificed herself for Superman (and really just beat the snot out of the Anti-Monitor!) the whole backstory of the Monitor/Anti-Monitor is revealed. And George Perez really shows what he could do with a comic panel. Especially wonderful were the little backround scenes. Brainiac 5 sobbing over the loss of his great love. The Legion's Wildfire reporting the loss of one of their own. Beast Boy's comments about the Marvel Family. The Golden Age Atom coming to terms with Wildcat's injuries and his own advancing age. And while, this was the first really big death in the series, another was right around the corner. While this facsimile edition still represents well, it does not convey the true shock that we all had back in the day. 10 out of 10.

ETERNAL WARRIOR #1 VALIANT COMICS/ALIEN BOOKS

The Valiant Universe is really the Little Engine Who Could. From it's first appearance in the 1980's spearheaded by Jim Shooter, to its selling to Acclaim Comic in 1994 to its relaunching in 2004, etc., etc., etc. So it's reappearing now is no great surprise. Many of the characters go all the way back to the 1960's and their starting point under Gold Key Comics. Back before we were collectors and simply readers, the Gold Key hero comics were looked upon as a poor bastard third cousin to Marvel and DC. The kind of books when the person ordering for the newsstand had no idea what they were ordering. Which is kind of a shame because these characters obviously have some sort of charm to have lasted to this day. The Eternal Warrior started in the Jim Shooter Years but that isn't a bad thing. And the fact the story bounces between time frames keeps it interesting. As we go from Pompeii in 79 CE to the Crimea of 1317 to today. Well drawn, interesting story, excellent inking and coloring. What more can you ask for. 8 out of 10.

Day 14 and our selections are ...

Big Bang-tober- Grandfather Clock

JSA-TOBER- Power Girl with a bonus card because I couldn't do any early version of Power Girl (1970's All-Star Comics featuring the Super Squad) without including an image from when the Star-Spangled Kid created an emblem for her costume. A Superman logo with a p instead of an s.🤦‍♂️ she crushed it in her hand and gave poor Syl the business.

You know that fate is still up and working when your friends put out a recipe book (currently on Amazon! Shameless Plug!) that provides recipes for mixed cocktails using tea as the main ingredient instead of alcohol. Which works for me and my two bad kidneys! Was so pleased with it that I accessed Sly Hondo's Amazon account to post a review.
"As a former bartender, in the days when cocktails consisted of two or three ingredients, I find the idea of current mixologists infusing and straining things amazing in what they can fuse (I believe that is the right term) into some perfect alcoholic beverage. Earning them praise and noteriety. It also doesn't help having two bad kidneys which means that my days of drinking are long over with. My last best drink of choice is regular old Iced Tea with some fresh lemon. That's about as exciting as I get these days.
So when a friend recommended this book, I decided that it couldn't hurt to check into it. And what I found was a collection of drinks that fell directly onto my radar. The recipes are not that complicated, so you don't need to have a mixology degree to make them and while all of them are not in my wheelhouse, most of them are. With recipes like the Earl Grey Bergamot Sparkler and the Golden Hues and Midnight Blues filling these pages with new and exciting combinations, I will be getting a new pizazz filled drink menu at the house. This is one of those ideas that a smart bar/restaurant operator should invest in to open up a new niche in the hospitality market. 5 out of 5 stars."

SESAME STREET #2 Oni Press

Writer Stephanie Williams proves once again that she not only knows her Sesame Street but also knows how to write for younger audiences. And artist Beth Hughes does a good job with the characters images. As you can imagine, we have a few lessons that can be learned. With it all taking place in a slower, less stress-filled world. However, two issues in and I realised what I was missing here, the human characters, I was watching the program pretty much from it's inception in 1969. And while the muppets were definitely what kept me watching, it made more sense to me for the real people to be the ones explaining the life lessons to the muppets. And while I do miss Gordon, his wife Susan, Bob, and Mr. Hooper, I do realize that not having human characters in the mix means that we don't have to have 'special episodes' where the cast must explain to Big Bird that Mr. Hooper had passed away and wouldn't be coming back to the store. (A real episode that was made when Mr. Hooper actor Will Lee died in real life.) I can't help but wonder how much better it would be if there was once again real life people living on Sesame Street. This title still presents a great introductory path to reading and interest in comics. I give it a 9 out of 10.

GREEN LANTERN CIVIL CORPS SPECIAL #1

Let's, for the sake of this review, accept a few Doc opinions. First, having multiple Green Lanterns from Earth is wrong. It goes against the Guardians Master Plan of one Green Lantern per sector. You could have team ups between alien Green Lanterns and you could have a back up in case the main GL was down for the count but that's it. Second, having multiple colors of power rings was never in my top ten lists. Since every hero has to have an evil doppelganger, Sinestro gets a pass. But these days, the universe of the Green Lantern is so messed up that we are left with a confussing jumble of characters, storylines, and villains. An evil shapeshifting dictator who everyone should have been able to see through is nothing these days. But with all this hodge-podge backround, writers Jeremy Adams and Phillip Kennedy Johnson do manage to keep things moving briskly. They give us our fill of old and new characters, future plot points, and endings to some of the past stories that brought us to this point. Artist Salvador Larroca handles panel after panel of over-filled group shots with breath-taking single page images. And we must give a big shout out to colorist Luis Guerrero. Page after page of characters that glow with different colored light is no easy task. Plus, throw in a reminder that Alan Scott is still a Green Lantern and I'll take a look. I get the impression that this special was necessary to clear up some of the clutter so that the new All In Green Lantern title can continue unimpeded. A fun ride that did little to bring me back into the Green Lantern fold. 7 out of 10.

5 STAR SUPER-HERO SPECTACULAR (1977) DC COMICS

Ahhhh, the good ole days right before the DC Implosion! 80 page specials for a dollar! They didn't have to make any sense and this one was a prime example. This one is a bit of a mystery to figure out. While Batman, Green Lantern, and the Flash all had regular titles, Aquaman was appearing in Adventure Comics and the Atom was appearing from time to time in Action Comics as a backup feature. So it wasn't really like you were getting something you couldn't see elsewhere. The stories did not interact with one another and there seems to be no logical reason for these particular heroes to be appearing here. But this is a prime example of reading comics in the 1970's! We didn't need a reason and if you were brave enough to risk a dollar (lotta money back then - you'll have to trust me!) what you received was nothing more than brilliant. Cary Bates, Irv Novick, and Frank McLaughlin creating a Silver Age version of Jonie Swift, a female version of the Flash! Denny O'Neil and Joe Staton throwing Green Lantern a philosophical debate as to the nature of life in the universe! Gerry Conway, Dick Dillin, and Jack Abel fighting against a sun based villain while morning over his recently deceased son! The Atom travelling in time thanks to Paul Kupperberg, Steve Stiles, and Bob McLeod! And the big finally as Batman takes on the all purpose villain, Kobra, thanks to Martin Pasko, Mike Nasser, and Joe Rubinstein! Thought provoking action and excitement! As regular comics were making the transition from 30 to 35 cents, this one would make your parents eyes bug out with the price tag. Luckily, comic fans were smart back then and pointed out that this was a bargain as you got five 30 cent comics for only a dollar. Heck, Mom. That saves you fifty cents! My kind of book, 9 out of 10.
