Handy to remember when you’re choosing the right rug (or no rugs) for your horse.

Do you have a horse that loses weight easily in winter and struggles to stay in good condition? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Horses use energy to keep warm when temperatures fall in the colder months. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This means if we do not compensate for increased energy demands by changing their diet, they may use their internal energy reserves (fat) to fill the gap (demand vs. intake). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For hard doers and older horses, losing weight may not be desirable and so we need to support them to help maintain weight in winter. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Feeding more hay and supporting your horse’s gut health can help. Fibre fermentation by microbes in the hindgut produces heat as a by-product – like having an internal heater to keep warm… pretty clever ‘ey! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
