Techno Yoga is a very free form of yoga done to Techno music. We find Techno music ideal because of its hypnotic, trance-inducing quality.
This approach is very different to the competitive, mechanical and gymnastic yoga forms commonly taught these days.

Here is the recording of the Robot's set on Sunday 14th April in the Hammahalle, Sisyphos Berlin. Thanks to everyone who was there! It was a lot of fun for me. I also find it so cool to know that we are now recognised by Unesco and inscribed on the German national Registry of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Techno Yoga with Rob Bennett & DJ Crawford
Rob Bennett and DJ Crawford did the very first Techno Yoga workshop in 2010 at the 2nd World Congress of the Hedonist International in Riebau, Germany. Since then they have developed and expanded the idea.
Having tried doing yoga to various kinds of music, Rob discovered that electronic dance music helped him best to quiet his mind and enter into a deeper state of trance whilst practicing asanas. He also found that this hypnotic music made him more creative in his practice leading him to new possibilities; relaxing the constrictions of the formal, traditional yoga model.
Now he has developed a very intuitive and enjoyable way of doing yoga that is partly concentrated and precise, partly free movement merging into dance. He loves to share this in workshops at dance clubs and music festivals to let participants see if it works for them.
Rob Bennett has been practicing and teaching Desikachar yoga for 50 years. Rob was lucky to attend workshops with Sri T.K.V. Desikachar himself, the son of Sri Krishnamacharya as well as learning with his students for many years. This kind of yoga is very different to the competitive, mechanical and gymnastic kind of yoga taught commonly these days in fitness studios.
Hatha yoga was originally intended as a meditative, centring discipline where healing in the sense of "becoming whole" or connecting with the source was the main focus. In his teaching Rob remains true to these old yogic aspirations and tries to support participants within their capabilities - helping to explore boundaries without pressure.
Our present day society is riddled with competitiveness. Achievement at school and university, property and wealth, reputation and fame are amongst the most important human “values”. Performance and accomplishment are of utmost importance and have become pathologically compulsive. Yoga has unfortunately been infected and sullied by these so-called Western ideals. There are even yoga competitions entirely contradicting the basic principles of yoga. It is not important how well or precisely an asana is performed but how the asana affects the practitioner. When our attention is directed towards the immediate experience of the here and now rather than towards the quality of our performance and our inner critic, we can relax into a deep meditative state. If we perform yoga with pressure to do it ‘correctly’, be it from within or without, we lose the connection between what we are doing and our experience.
The word “Yoga” is derived from the Sanskrit root ‘yuj’ (युज्). In English the word “Yoke” or in German “Joch” are derived from the same root – that which joins together. We can think of the joining or union of the mind and body within the individual. This is important because it can prepare the ground for the realisation of ultimate union. This is that there is no individual consciousness – the dissolution of the ego leading to the understanding that all is one and one is all.
As the great ancient sage Patanjali to whom yoga is attributed put it:
“Yoga is the neutralisation and cessation of ego-directed awareness. Once this has become stilled, we realise that we are and have always been one with the Infinite – that our awareness of this reality was only limited by our infatuation with limitation.”
