Tonight (8pm) on FRIDAY NIGHT LIVE – WINTER RHYTHMS – Roots Blues Folk and World Music

During the pandemic lockdown of 2021, a group if artists collaborated to present a series of live streamed concerts from their homes. Tonight we revisit some of those concerts. It’s a remarkable result considering some of the performances were recorded on their phones!

In the first set you will hear tonight, we feature Alejandro Florez - Guitarist (Flamenco Guitar), Suzie So Blue (folk) , James Briguglio (Kopasetic’s drummer - Roots), and Alec Randles (guitar).

The second set introduces Kim Yang Music 楊予菁 (Indie folk). Kim creates music for the soul. With her ethereal blend of sounds, she creates music that balances delicately between vulnerability and power. Her bushfire tribute Garden of Eden received 4.5 stars from Triple J’s Roots ‘n’ All Host, Nkechi Anele, who said: ‘Kim Yang is a force of nature, and she humbles me’.
Sri Lustri Experience (Indian Guitar Soundscapes) then takes you on a meditative journey through effects laden guitar compositions, synthetic beats and Indian inspired soundscapes. Matthew Lustri explores sonic experiments and improvised ragas ranging from the mellow to the psychedelic, joined by Liam O’Connell on effects/samples.
Rafe Morris from The Decideds (Blues) rounds out the set with his rollicking style of guitar from his back yard.

Live stream courtesy Nick Vevers (Canberra podcast Mustard Flats), production by Rafael Florez (Clandestino Canberra)
Post production and introduction by Chris Deacon OAM.

Full live stream edition can be found here (includes interviews with some of the artists live):

We curated some live recoding session along with ArtSound FM 92.7 at the end of last year - and you'll be hearing them in the coming months on FRIDAY NIGHT LIVE + World Vibe - ArtSound FM. First up was local's Zambezi Sounds Canberra with a unique session focused on the M'bira

ZAMBEZI SOUNDS - M’bira Concert
Zambezi Sounds, Canberra’s premier African dance music band, play a vibrant mix of contemporary and traditional African music. The mbira, known colloquially as the finger harp, thumb piano, gourd piano and many other names, is a featured instrument in the band.

Traditional Mbira Nights or “Bira” as they are known in Zimbabwe are very spiritual and special. For this session, the Zambezi Sounds traditional section presented a night of the Nyami Nyami (a Zambezi river god or snake spirit) mbira rhythms which form the basis of spiritual music in Zimbabwe. The band leader, Ben Mutandadzi, chated about the origins of the mbira instrument and the different types of mbira in Zimbabwe and beyond and his own story of how he learnt to play the instrument. He will also discussed the conflict between spirituality and religion during the colonial era and how mbira music is viewed currently.

Recorded by Tim Austin, curated by Rafael (Clandestino Canberra) produced and presented by Chris Deacon OAM
