"Out of Character" A one man show featuring Ari'el Stachel
You know how much we enjoyed the Tony Award winning musical "The Band's Visit." Well, Tony winner for the Band's Visit, Ari'el Stachel, has just opened a one man show at the Berkeley Rep called, "Out of Character." A Berkeley, CA native, Stachel is directed by former Berkeley Rep Artistic Director, Tony Taccone, in this sometimes funny, sometimes poignant autobiographical journey from early youth to today. Early on in the show he describes his condition of profuse sweating and incessant anxiety - all part of a lifelong struggle with several psychological issues. Growing up in a post 9/11 America with a Yemeni Israeli father and an Ashkenazi Jewish mother, plus an early diagnosis of OCD, provided some challenges for the young man. Bullying in school caused him to sometimes deny his Arab heritage, like a chameleon, he tried to fit in wherever he could. Who am I, seems to be the constant theme in this production - Jewish, Arabic, black, American, or a bit of each? His physicality is terrific - whether simulating the movements and speech of his friends, his father, teachers, or therapist, he uses his body and facial expressions to communicate an image that is intimate and emotional. Hilarious at times and deeply moving throughout, this coming of age drama touches on many topical societal issues - racism, bullying, prejudice, the meaning of identity. There is talk of bringing the concept to TV. We think film would be better suited to the depth, societal insight and story of a young man coming of age at a very challenging time in our country's history. At curtain call the audience rose to their feet applauding vigorously calling Ari'el Stachel back to the stage several times. A powerful, inspiring and soul baring performance - well done Ariel Stachel! Highly recommend! C&W
