"Bloodsuckers (In Sluggish Pursuit) - 2025 by .mtfd
Modroc, Ceramics, Found Objects
Shown as part of Between Dreams and Tomorrow in our gallery earlier this month.

"In sluggish pursuit of survival, a swarm of leeches pour out of their cocoon. The bloodsuckers rain upon the ground in a symphony of wet thuds, and they trail outward in search of a host from which to feed. One by one, they latch onto fleshy beings and gorge on thick, hot blood, exerting corruptible power over that which is pure. Two organisms, parasite and host, become one in a convoluted marriage until it is unclear where one ends and the other begins, United, they sing unholy prayers of ecstatic bliss."

Thank you messymoo_ and bethtowersdoes for putting on such a lovely show!

Gallery bookings are now open for winter 2025. Full details, https://artspace.uk/venue/the-island/gallery-space/

AN OPPORTUNITY FOR A STUDIO SPACE AT HOME

Two unfurnished rooms for one person available in a lovely rented house in St George as of July 14th. It would suit someone wanting an additional arts & craft space/studio to work in from home and split the household bills. This is a workaround for the HMO regs that have just been introduced in the area.

Your art/craft would need to be relatively clean and the room protected so that you could return it to being habitable (relatively untouched) on leaving.

Total rent would be £1,100 pcm.

You'd be sharing the house with me, the other tenant (not a live-in landlord).

Here is the Spare Room link for further info:

Happy for you to DM me with questions.

Repost from Oddly Moving following their residency at The Island:

WORKING TITLE
This seems to be what has emerged from the past six days! A solo show about the apocalypse and miscarriage. But funny. Then really not funny…

This has been a new approach as I had written a lot of material before starting the residency. Willow and I have spent a lot of time moving scenes around to discover what stories we can tell which is a magical place to be in this show’s first official creation stage. I also want to Highly Recommend doing two sharings early on. The feedback was so insightful. After Friday’s sharing I gleaned some useful info that led to a rewrite and a whole new version that I could test out today.

I am so incredibly grateful to artspaceuk for giving us the space and being so supportive. To date this show has been developed without any funding. I’ve done a lot of writing/sewing/dancing in my living room with Willow coming over to watch and drink tea and having a dedicated rehearsal space came at the right time. Massive thanks to willowvidalhallcreative for her incredible mind, her time and for holding the space so deftly. Thanks to thescratchtheatreinfo for supporting an idea that this show grew from and for the inspiration and community. And thankyou to everyone who has come to watch and offer feedback, it’s so generous of you to offer your time and thoughts and has really fuelled development ideas. It’s lovely to feel supported by friends & peers when taking about a subject that involves feeling isolated. That’s the Oscar speech prepped!

There’s a lot of thoughts to be mulched but I’m excited about one day inviting you to apocalypse Blind Date & other stories.

Our Story

The Island is a self-funded multi-use arts facility and creation centre based in the old police station in Bristol city centre. It hosts a wide variety of creative spaces from circus training, dance and rehearsal rooms, making spaces and artists studios to dark rooms, recording and music production studios, a gallery and a suite of early 20th century police cells. We can’t believe that in 2018 we turn 10 years old! If you want to get involved in a collaborative showcase event in Bristol then the Island is the place to do it. Like the name suggests, the Island is an isolated centre of creativity and energy located smack bang in the city centre. As a venue, it has many unique event spaces and a can-do attitude making it ideal for a Bristol event. The Island comes to life thanks to its vibrant programming of regular workshops, training classes, performances and events. Artists from all disciplines now occupy our spaces; people from all walks of life can host their own exhibitions, or start their own class or group, which creates a widely varied collection of artist-led projects. The Island is majorly involved with Bristol's art scene, having taken part in BS1 Open, Brisfest, Destination Bristol, Big Green Week, Mayfest and Bristol Biennial,. We are rapidly becoming one of the key locations of choice for local art promotion. As well as all this, The Island is now hosting around 79 working artists. These artists are the beating heart of The Island, continually producing and showcasing new and engaging artwork. This made The Island one of the liveliest and most thriving artist communities in Bristol. Our studios are of varying sizes and range from huge open spaces, to smaller solo studios, to our converted cell studios, which are exclusively used by artists who work with sound and music. The Island is part of the Artspace Lifespace project, an artist led initiative that recycles vacant, under-used and problem properties into thriving active creative resources and has been active since 2008.
