The Trump Administration is considering renaming and reframing the Gullah Geechee Corridor under a different designation like the “Southern Heritage Coastal Maritime Region,”. Suffice it to say that it would be a significant and devastating attack on the preservation of our culture and federal funding sources through the National Park Service.

The Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, designated by Congress in 2006, is a National Heritage Area that stretches along the southeastern U.S. coast from North Carolina to Florida. It highlights the history, traditions, and contributions of the Gullah Geechee people, descendants of enslaved West Africans who created a unique culture, language, and community identity. Their heritage has deep roots in agriculture, fishing, storytelling, cuisine, and spirituality. The corridor aims to preserve this cultural legacy and educate the public about its significance.
