I’ve been thinking a lot about scent memory lately. About how swiftly a certain smell can cause you to fondly recall a moment or season long past, acting as a “glimmer.” (The opposite of a trigger.)

Happy second anniversary to Lani & Alana, Peyton & Brian and Rachael & Chris!
That’s right, due to a perfect storm of Covid postponements we had a wedding on Saturday and two on Sunday that weekend. We also had a literal storm that fell a tree across our driveway, knocking out the power and kicking off our annual driveway of flowering in the dark the second weekend in October. It was wild. But each wedding was beautiful, sentimental and successful (and SO different aesthetically) and we lived to tell the tale. 🤗

Before their lively Reception for 150, SC & B married with just a handful of their best friends and immediate family in attendance. As such, and I wanted to enhance the intimate nature of their Ceremony as much as possible. Each of SC’s six brideswomen carried a different single-variety bouquet which she then placed within hidden mechanics in the arch to symbolize the many ways in which our loved ones contribute positively to our romantic relationship. They “planted” their good energy so that the couples’ love and partnership would continue to grow. 🥰

These foraged yellow blooms are called Pride of Barbados… so naturally and I referred to them as “Rihanna Flower” all week. 😘

Fun Fact - We *apparently* have an annual tradition of getting hit by a big storm the second weekend of October. Ya know, a notoriously busy time for weddings and also my birthday weekend. But a storm is hardly a tradition… until you add in a tree falling across our driveway and knocking out our power so that we’re working by lamp or candlelight. I made this Big Mama Bar Moment last year during our second iteration of the hallowed tradition. Good thing we have so dang many candles and a “can do” spirit! 😂🤦🏼♀️

We grew everything in these sweet little Rehearsal Dinner arrangements for M&B. And they’re made of all edible ingredients - the herbs, okra, green tomatoes, marigolds and even the zinnias and dahlias. I loved it so much. And now, per usual, I’ve let this idea evolve into something wild and whimsical and wonderful just waiting for it’s big moment… so let me know if you’ve got a milestone birthday party or another fabulous dinner party where you really want to push the envelope. I’m ready. 💪🏻

Seating charts are always an opportunity to be personal and playful, IMO. So when the clients are environmental scientists that means mushroom clusters and vintage botanical drawings and daffodils with their bulbs intact and a selection of textbooks and field guides with on-palette book jackets. Lucky for me, my Mama is also a renowned (retired) ecologist so between the clients’ collection and hers I had lots of pretty green soil science books on hand. Was this the first time in history that “Soil Fertility and Fertilizers” has proudly been displayed as part of a wedding design? Probably. And that’s precisely the point.

Our beautiful boy turned 4 yesterday. He is empathetic and affectionate, brilliant and curious, an incredible homesteader and helper. He is both a natural performer and the most captive audience. The most enthusiastic Pearl & Sky team member and the favorite vendor . He is so imaginative and inquisitive, full of wonder and joy. He is the sweetest boy and the best friend we’ve ever had.

These past four years have been far and away the most amazing of my life, thanks to the magic Maxwell brings to each moment. I told him last night that I don’t think he changed me but instead he’s helping me become who I was always meant to be. Max, my darling, I love you more than life itself. Thank you for being born… at 41w6d after I pushed for 4 hours and 47 minutes. 😂You were so worth it.

Two weeks ago today we arrived on the island of Canouan in St. Vincent and the Grenadines to make floral magic with . It was a whirlwind of a week, filled with firsts -
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
First time working internationally.
First time floraling a 17th century Anglican church before sunrise while bats swooped all around us.
First 12-minute bridal bouquet - which turned out to be a new favorite.
First time working with literal car loads of bougainvillea. *le sigh*
First time foraging 80% of our product, out of necessity - a huge challenge that turned out to be the most beautiful accident. One that gave our work the dreamiest, most palpable sense of place. What a gift we were given by the island!

And while it was not my first time working alongside an incredible team of creatives on a spectacular property, this team and this place were truly special, unlike any other I’ve had the pleasure of knowing. I’ll never forget the experience - the people, the property, the amorous tortoises, the shenanigans, the flowers, the hustle, the genuinely inspired work we created together. It was our first collaboration but certainly not our last.

And a gigantic, emphatic, adoring thank you to the lovely and amazing for being in step with me every moment as we pivoted harder than Ross ever could, snipped alllll the mystery botanicals (for better or worse) and designed some of the most beautiful pieces Pearl & Sky has ever made. I couldn’t have done it without you, friend. *insert Kezroy’s handshake here*

This July 4th was a leisurely day spent with (some of) my amazing family. We swam, ate well, played in the rain and marveled at fireworks. I arranged these flowers my Mama grew for me and I chose to be hopeful in spite of myself. There is such astounding beauty in this nation, both in the land and in the people, so today I’m going to believe that we can make changes that honor all this beauty. Today I’ll choose to believe that we can be a nation to take pride in, one that nurtures and provides for all its people so that we can be better, more loving neighbors and stewards of this Earth. I choose to believe that we can be a nation that sees and celebrates the whole rainbow and not just the red, white and blue.

Much of life, and of relationships, is a dance. This is especially true for Caitlin and Daniel, both company members . To honor that dance, I designed these “pas de deux” stands and worked with the talented to bring them to life. I think they also look like a double helix and I’m into that as well; when you’re really in love with your person or your art that, too, becomes part of your DNA.

I could (and often do) wax on indefinitely about the beauty and the mystery of flowers. Their resilience, their individuality, their capacity to bring joy to others and their wild and wondrous aging process make it easy for me to draw the comparison to womanhood. So take a moment to gaze lovingly at these magical dahlias and then tell a woman you love that they, too, have their very own brand of magic. 💫
