What is Fusion Dance? Fusion dancers use the many genres of partner dance to create personal, improvisational expressions of music. For examples of fusion dancing, check out the We are explorers of movement, connection & music. We are investigators and creators. Our community is built on respect, the willingness to say “yes” to new ideas, and the freedom to color outside the lines of traditional partner dancing. Each new dance is an entire experience unto itself. Be yourself... because everyone else is taken.

Definition of “Expression”: The freedom to show the world who you are - loudly, softly, or somewhere wildly in between.

You all showed up and showed out - in sequins, silk, mesh, glitter, leather, lace, animal prints, florals, and full-blown fantasy. The Motley Hue dance floor was a living runway of color, character, creativity, and flair.

Thank you for dressing your truth, playing with style, and making fashion part of the magic. You were walking art. 🤍

One of the hallmarks of a classic “fusion” song is that it has elements of both rhythm and melody in it.

As fusion dancers we love to go between grooving with rhythm and flowing with melody, changing the way we dance to express the different parts of the music.

Groove = a short repeated movement with pulse, usually expressed with the full body to the baseline of the music

Flow = continuous sequential movement transitioning between one moment and the next, expressing the melody or atmosphere of the song

A mode is the *way* you are dancing at any given moment.
On the fusion dance floor we can switch between one mode and another, such as groove and flow.

So yes, let’s have both our rhythm and our melody!

Our electronic base beat and our beautiful violins.

Bring on the heart pumping drums and mix them with the floating piano and the sassy horns.

We want it all.

———
This quote is a paraphrased line from the Natya Shastra, which is one of the most important/ influential ancient texts on dance, music, and theatre in India.
The quote reflects a core idea in the text: that rhythm (tala) is essential to dance, just as melody (raga) is to music. It reminds us that rhythm is the heartbeat of dance - without it, movement loses its soul.

Gratitude and Big Thanks to our DJs and sound engineers – Part 2

Sonochrome, DJ Tony Scicio, DJ Neil Benen, and DJ Greta K., DJ's POMONA & KENYA, the fabulous David Keogh - your sets lit us up (literally and metaphorically). And thanks to Justin Johnson for making them sound as amazing as they did!

This crew brought brilliance to the floor: from bold variety sets, to electronic grooves, sensual beats, and dance floor gems fresh from across Europe and the U.S.

Whether guiding us into deep solo moments or wild collective journeys you each held space for exploration, joy, and serious party energy. We felt it. Much Appreciation & Thank you!

Big thanks to our DJs & Musicians - Part 1

Alan Markley, David Keogh, Stephanie Yamamoto, and DJ Katalyst (Kathleen Evans) - thank you for bringing the vibe, pulse, and soul to our dance floors.

This year, you turned rhythm & harmony into connection - layering deep textures, lyrical grooves, lush instrumentation to danceable beats. From cinematic keys to downtempo drops, irresistible basslines and etheric vocals.

You gave us sets that moved body, spirit and mind. It's still traveling with us now ✨

As dancers we so often get so stuck in “what” someone is dancing…

… is that really a Blues Idiom?
… What is the proper swing out for Lindy Hop?
… Were there enough basics to actually consider that Westie?
… Can that really be called Tango?
… Is it NeoZouk or LambaZouk or Brazilian Zouk?
… Kizomba or Urban Kiz?

And yes, in many ways these distinctions do matter for us. Especially when we start wanting to organize and commodify them.

But at the heart of it…

Maybe we can care a little less WHAT people are dancing and just celebrate the fact that they ARE dancing.

Definition of "Turning": A moment of balance, rotation, and effortless grace; a conversation with momentum.

These images from Motley Hue 2025 capture dancers in moments of perfect spin and beautiful flow -where everything aligns, and the world blurs gently around the edges.

Thank you for how each of you navigates the dance floor with such fun, elegance, expression and joy. Thank you for bringing your spins and smiles, and for reminding us of the beauty in every turn.

Meet Robin & Lucy — Guest Teachers & Fusion Nerd Dream Team for our upcoming Retreat Crème de la Connection.

From Salzburg to Berlin, these two bring a playful mix of dance styles, curiosity, and connection to every floor they touch.

Lucy blends swing, blues, ballet, and contemporary (with a splash of tango!) into rich, embodied movement—always more about how it feels than how it looks.

Robin’s on a lifelong quest to learn all the dances—Lindy, Zouk, CI, Tango, and beyond. With the precision of a uni lecturer and the heart of a social dancer, he crafts classes that go deep into the technique while making room for magic.

Together, they’ll invite you to break things down, nerd out, and explore what fusion really means: curiosity, creativity, and connection.
