It’s our holiday episode and last show of 2024 so I thought I’d invite one of the first people to teach me DJing and playing at parties is Something Else head Dave Stuart. Dave and I have had long history together, it’s been a while between drinks so we chat about starting your career in your 30s, the motivations behind why you run a party and the attraction of vinyl DJing through “inconvenience and expense”.

Danielle Moore 1971-2024

Like a lot of you, I was devastated to hear of Danielle Moore's passing earlier this month.

Crazy P meant and mean a lot to me and are one of the 3 pillars that make up my DJing and music life. Danielle was an amazing talent, a soulful wonder and mischievous.

I can't process my grief sitting here, so I made a 90 minute megamix, of Crazy P through my journey with them, using only her vocal tunes and in chronological order from 2002-2022. In a poignant twist, my last radio show, one day after her passing, ended with their latest tune 'Any Signs of Love', a much more sad and surreal placement of that tune.

"You started something, in my soul."

This is the first time a musician I have deeply loved and admired has passed on, it's a gut punch.

Crazy P are one of the 3 foundational bands/musicians who shaped the Du that is Nick Spurway. They are, every year, in my top 5 of Spotify's Unwrapped, since it launched 8 years ago. The most consistent, authentic and masterful band of all musicians I love. Never had a misstep or fault. Start to finish, flawless discography.

I had How I Program classes from Danielle and 2 band members (3 in total) which were amazing. I saw the full live band in 2012 in the front row, and the Soundsystem numerous times over the years. I would rinse and rinse and rinse any and all Crazy P tunes in almost every set I'd play - and still do. If there's a gig, Crazy P had a tune for it.

I would not be a DJ today if it was not for Danielle and Crazy P. No question. I can't fathom the impact and influence they have had on me and continue to do so. It is immeasurable.

This grief is so hard to make sense of, it's an all new type of sadness. So it's time to blast the discography, raise a glass, cut shapes.
