An incredibly inspiring group of women spoke at yesterday's celebration of the New York City Council's restoration of funding to Arts and Culture. Adrienne Adams, Carolina Rivera (mother of 2 including a now 6 month old who went back to work on restoring funds after giving birth. Yes superwoman!!) and Julie Won spoke SO eloquently about the importance of the arts to the survival of NYC. Props to the brilliant, unstoppable Lucy Sexton ( when are you running for office?) and Coco Killingsworth from BAM. What a huge ray of light in these anxious times. And what an extraordinary ( and fabulously dressed) group of colleagues in the Arts and Culture. It was so good to be in your midst.

Had a fantastic time gala last night night. So impressed by the political power that and have assembled to help them create their fabulous new theater in LIC. I got to talk with their honoree, lieutenant governor Antonio Delgado who talked about his own background as an artist and the importance of his marriage to documentary filmmaker Lacey Schwartz who I know from my days at the Foundation for Jewish Culture which supported her incredible film. I was seated next to state Senator Jose Serrano who once worked !!! Another eloquent spokesperson for the arts. And guess who sat down at our table?!? (Photo 2). That would be (possibly our next mayor) Jumaane Williams. Pictured speaking with honoree Jimmy Van Branera. Also honored was Leah Krauss from the Joyce Mertz Gilmore Foundation. Talk about champions of the Arts!!!The excellent Emcee - my friend and neighbor, the inimitable Paul Lazar! Congratulations to the honorees and especially the team

Another great class . Couldn't fit all 16 participants in this pic. We focused on compostable ways of supporting arrangements. Some used Agrawool. Others used stems in the vases as support. All made gorgeous designs. All different 🙌🙌🙌 some signed up for my upcoming SERIES at in October. Had a few interior designers and a curator in the group. Super Fun.

Special flower delivery in The East boothbay, Maine. If only I could kayak to the "fresh out of the garden" source. Regina started her garden from seed while recovering from cancer treatment. A very healing process. Took these home from her garden and arranged hem for our friends in Brooklin Maine ( in case you were curious Fleur Elise BKln came from my hope to have a flower shop in brooklyn New York and Brooklin, Maine. Hence no vowel). Dont think that will happen but it is so great to be here and to meet amazing gardeners.

Had a wonderful time with (Dean moss) and (Julie Lemberger) where we went to see 's beautiful TRULY site-specific work inspired by the sculptures of I LOVEd the costumes which Shechet designed. Especially those socks and sneakers ( such beautiful contrasts with the colors of the sculptures.). And Annieb is SUCH a master of space. Storm King is especially difficult for dance. So easy for the human form to get lost in these vast expanses of lawn and mostly giant scaled sculptures. She and her gorgeous dancers made it work. My particular favorite moments were the transitions- the holding of skirts. The delicious run down the hill and the final walk down the road towards the lovely orange piece in the distance ( so smart of whoever placed Shechet's sculpture there. And the use of the shiny pieces of fabric so you could follow the dancer's into the distance. ). A very beautiful evening.

Cousin Isabel (my mom's first cousin) had the most beautiful orchids growing on her tree. "I don't do anything." Isabel left this world after 97 and 1/2 years, on Monday night. Her funeral was yesterday. She leaves behind ( among many others) 6 great grandchildren who lucky for them, are all old enough to remember her. As we all will - as the most accepting, understanding, loving person. She was married to Milton for more than 60 years. She was always completely clear on priorities- family first. Every one who ever knew her loved her. She was just so loveable. The last time Isaac and I saw her in late April( photo 2) , we had dinner with her and Cousin Arlene and Bob. After dinner she said "having a good dinner with people I love, this makes me so happy." Words to live by.

On these last days of 2021 I went to the 28th street Flower “District” to find some extraordinary flora for some beloved and discerning clients. All the stores were beautifully stocked and almost empty of customers. Maybe its the after xmas slump or people aren’t having parties because of the uptick? Whatever the reason, I encourage all of you who live in the metro area - you don’t have to be a florist! (you just have to pay sales tax!) - GO. Walk around this most special block (28th st mostly betwn 6th and 7th ave). See smell, enjoy being in a foreign country for a few minutes. Buy flowers you won’t find at TJ’s. Let’s keep this precious place alive. Be-spoke arrangements/calm, creative classes in flower design

Elise Bernhardt started Fleur Elise Bkln in part so she could keep going to the flower market, one of the last “districts” of its kind in NYC. Her experience studying Ikebana in Tokyo was a turning point in her approach to creating and teaching flower design.

Bernhardt’s studied choreography with Bessie Schonberg . She likes to say, “Flowers are like dancers, only quieter.” They need space, light, room to stretch and bend, a place to be themselves AND in relation to others. She also produced site-specific performances for many years and the same rules of composition apply, albeit on a smaller scale. The container and the setting dictate much about how the flowers are arranged.

Every Fleur Elise Bkln arrangement is one-of-a-kind. As the client, you share your preferences - what colors you like (or don’t), what flowers you like, and if you have a vase that you want to use, we will adapt our creation to it.

Bernhardt further combined her experience as a long-time Executive of non-profits and her passion for flowers. She offers TEAM BUILDING THROUGH FLORAL DESIGN WORKSHOPS which are incredibly effective at helping corporate and non-profit groups get to bond, collaborate and learn about each other’s individual creative styles.
