RSVP is an initialism derived from the French phrase Répondez s'il vous plaît, literally meaning "Respond, if you please", or just "Please respond", to require confirmation of an invitation.

It is considered polite to respond to both a "Save the date" notification to confirm firstly if you should be included in the invitational, and to the Invitation with an RSVP.

This confirms your host may expect you at the event and it is always considered good etiquette to respond rather sooner than later. If you are not sure of your availability yet, maybe confirm this to the host/ess too so they can put you on a maybe list. The expense of planning an event, the catering etc all means the host should plan timorously to ensure they are prepared for your attendance in the best possible way.

It is only good courtesy to ensure they know whether to expect you.

Time is the coin of your life, spend it wisely in respecting others. It’s the one currency you cannot retrieve when lost and the highest compliment you can pay your host or hostess for their efforts.
