Look at that perfect little star in the middle of this Megan Dean Dahlia.

I spent the day yesterday finishing up dividing dahlias. And my fingers are crossed I'll have some time to get them in the ground this week.

It's going to be perfect planting weather, the soil has some moisture and the temperatures are finally warming up a bit.

Who's excited for dahlias this year?

Have you heard of ?

He wrote the book Atomic Habits, and has an email newsletter every Thursday. The following is a quote that I just wanted to share with you.

"Stop paying so much attention to what everyone else is doing and run your own race. How much time is spent reading other people's posts on social media, watching other people's exploits in the news, listening to other people's ideas on podcasts? Go have coffee with a friend. Go make something. Go outside. All those hours spent looking at someone else's life on a screen could be used to take action in your own life."

I love that.

Run your own race!

I think social media can be a place of great connection, but if it ever has you feeling down, I think this advice is fabulous. Go outside, go make something, go chat with a friend.

The first little bloom of '24 deserves its own spot on the grid. I love the steely blue of its stamens.

Producing these little beauties takes a winter of dedication. But they are totally worth the effort, I can't wait to put them in our subscription bouquets. Don't wait too long to order your subscription, our spots are limited this year.

I had the opportunity to be on the radio yesterday. During the interview the host asked what I would want people to know about flower farming in Utah , the good, bad and the ugly.

Sure, there's a lot that I could have talked about that is hard about farming. But my first thought was that I want you to know how much I love growing flowers for you.

It's something special to know where your food or your flowers came from. To know that there was a person that labored on your behalf. And cheerfully so. I love knowing where my flowers end up. It's the best knowing that I brought a little bit of beauty into my friends, neighbors and customers lives.

Thank you, for letting me grow flowers for you.

Have you heard of the term Persephone days? It's a term coined by Elliott Coleman for the time in winter where the daylight is under 10 hours a day.

Here in the Salt Lake valley the Persephone days start about November 16th and go to January 26th.

Why does it matter if there's less than 10 hours a day of sunlight? Other than maybe affecting us humans with seasonal effective disorder, It also means our plants don't put on growth.

Plants need over 10 hours of sunlight to grow. Which means during the Persephone period they kind of just hang out, waiting for the days where there's more sunshine.

I always cheer for January 27th, knowing that we have a little more light in our lives. And the plants are going to start growing again.

It's been a little quiet around here on the feed, but we are busy as bees behind the scenes.

We are prepping to have the *best* spring season we've ever had. We will have more peonies producing blooms than ever before. The ranunculus are in the ground and I'm so excited about the colors and varieties we have this year. Anemones are already peeking out of the soil. Tulips are getting planted early next week.

If you think that your future self will be excited to have spring flowers, make sure to check our website next Saturday, November 18th. Our bouquet subscriptions will go on sale just in time for holiday gift giving.

If you have any questions about our spring or late summer subscription, please drop it below and we will answer it promptly.

All the gardens I live in are starting to slow down. (Seen above is our Backyard Cut Flower Garden at Snuck Farm.) There are fewer buckets of flowers, the regrowth is slower.

My cherry tree has a sprinkling of yellow leaves on its green branches.

I love the slower days. A break from the frenetic rush of summer abundance. A time to reflect on what went well this summer and what we can change for next year.

I'm excited to plant a handful or so of peonies. Excited to change up our irrigation a little bit for better results next year. Excited to pull out the varieties that didn't do great for us this year, while dreaming of the ones that will replace them in the spring. Excited to soak the ranunculus corms that will get tucked into a low tunnel in a few weeks.

Are you excited about the changing of the season? What garden dreams do you have?

While we are still enjoying the dahlias, marigolds and other late summer flowers, it's easy to get distracted planning for the start of next year's season.

The abundance and success of next spring depends a lot on the work we do now. Ranunculus and anemone corms arrived today and will be prepped for planting by the end of next week.

As much as I lament the end of one season, there is always the season ahead, sparkling on horizon and filled future flowers

This week on the farm we are embracing what I'm calling soft autumn colors. Peach, ivory, and gold instead of oranges and russets.

How are you feeling about the fall colors? Are you ready for the shift in seasons?

"Although the world is full of suffering, it is full also of the overcoming of it. My optimism, then, does not rest on the absence of evil, but on a glad belief in the preponderance of good and a willing effort always to cooperate with the good, that it may prevail."

Dahlias and their perfect symmetry means it is almost September. This bloom is the first of its variety to bloom but hopefully soon we will have lots to share.

In the meantime, we have lots of Lisianthus that you can order in bouquets on our website for pickup on Wednesday or Saturday. Don't miss out on this specialty flower.

Picture this with masses of weeds, overgrown Iris, and more grass than the actual lawn even had and you'll have a good picture of what it looked like when we moved in.

We tackled the front yard first thinking it would be a good way to make an impression on our new neighbors. It's been 10 years now, this photo is from 3 years ago, and now things are ready for a refresh.

My goals are-

1. Tame the wild, and edit some things out now that plants have matured.

2. Add some late summer and autumn color.

3. Divide our bigger perennials so that we can landscape another part of our yard with "free" plants.

How often do you refresh your landscape?

I almost feel bad about posting nothing but Lizzie's during Lisianthus season.

Each season is so fleeting though. The peonies are here for a few weeks and gone, same for the tulips that came before them. I think it's nature's way to keep us from getting too bored. An ever-changing view out our window.

Let's learn to savor each flower in its season.
