This week is children’s mental health week! We wanted to share some data we’ve collected from a recent project with a primary school which shares thoughts from staff about the project and also records the children’s check in and check out emotions 🫧

Our early intervention work involves Dance and Mindfulness workshops for small groups of children referred for needing extra emotional support, struggling with anxiety, low self esteem and/or are school refusers.

We are so proud of the work we do and will continue to do in primary schools to support and advocate for children to have provision to better mental health ✨

📢 Welcome Trinity who has recently joined our team teaching Dancing Mindfulness in Primary Schools

TRINITY MAGUIRE-TOOMBS

Trinity grew up with a passion for dancing and playing the piano, before going on to pursue Contemporary Dance at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. She then decided to further her training in Dance Theatre, so she joined the Professional Development Programme with Jasmin Vardimon Company.

Trinity has since been working as a freelance Artist and Teacher in various styles of Dance, Creative Practices and Performing Arts. Being a facilitator has broadened her understanding of the immense impact of dance on the physical and mental wellbeing’s of young people.

Through Truefitt, Trinity hopes to share her joy of dance through mindful practice, while nurturing the creativity and self-expression of young people.

📢 Welcome Sophie who joined our team this month as a Dancing Mindfulness facilitator!!

SOPHIE AUSTIN

Sophie is a 22-year-old dance artist from Surrey, currently based in East London. Having graduated from Trinity Laban with a BA Hons (1st Class) in Contemporary Dance in 2023, Sophie then experienced the JV2 professional development programme.

Sophie now works as a freelance contemporary dancer, creator and teacher working across London, pursing environments and work that mixes the highly physical, and narrative aspects of
dance.

For as long as she has been dancing, Sophie has been fascinated by the relationship between dance and well-being. In awe of how it can bring joy, connection, resilience, and solace.

“I am so excited to join the team, and help young people bring more mindful movement into their lives, allowing them to learn whilst growing up what a
valuable tool that can be”.

H A P P Y N E W Y E A R ✨

Yes, we are late with this post but blame baby Wren and the juggle of getting things up and running for the year which wouldn’t be possible without the superstar

⭐️ All of our dance and dancing mindfulness classes are now up and running for the spring term and we have some lovely new team members working with us

We’re almost at the end of January, a month I personally love because of the slower pace and the general lower expectations we have of each other and ourselves which can open up space to breath and reflect. It can however be an anxious time as we move into some uncertainty but I am doing my best this year to reframe my mindset so let me leave you with this when the days are still short, dark and cold..

what’s the best that can happen ? ✨✨

Magical Minds Autumn Tour 2024 and our Teacher in Residency project have now come to an end and we think the final week’s theme of gratitude is a perfect way to end the year 🤍

We are so grateful to NCEL CAMHS Provider (North London) for giving us the funding to visit 5 new schools in Enfield and Barnet this term, and we are extremely grateful to our creative team and school contacts for all their work and support.

In the photos you will see some things that the children this week were grateful for, one of the themes that artist Kitty shared with the children, alongside other important ideas such as non-judgement.

⭐️ We have reached over 2000 children and 100 teachers during this project, hopefully giving them tools to understand their emotions and look after their wellbeing

⭐️We have successfully collaborated with a Dance Movement Psychotherapist to develop a monitoring system for schools to analyse the progress of children participating in dancing mindfulness workshops (it’s always hard to prove that creative interventions can be beneficial for wellbeing so this is a huge step for us)!!!!

⭐️100% of teachers reported they would recommend us to other schools, so we can’t wait to bring our work to more schools in 2025!

🧠

Today we have released a new blog post on our website all about our project which focuses on promoting better mental health in primary schools through the arts and has been a huge focus of ours for the past 6 years ⭐️

Referrals to children and young people’s mental health services in the UK are at the highest record at 90,789 young people.

We are proud to be funded by a children’s and adolescent mental health services provider for our current tour of Magical Minds which recognises the impact of our work in schools ⭐️

🟡 We are almost halfway through the term and have already visited 4 schools throughout Enfield & Barnet with our Magical Minds Autumn tour 2024

🟡1500 pupils and 100 teachers have experienced our performance and Dancing Mindfulness workshops, all with insightful and positive feedback! We have loved how engaged all the pupils have been and hearing their thoughts

One staff member fed back that pupils now have ‘a better understanding of how to experience emotions and release them in a positive and healthy way’.

🟡We can’t wait to take Magical Minds to the remaining schools and then next term move into our tailored workshops for pupils who need additional support with their emotional wellbeing as we run Teacher in Residency

Something else MAGICAL has been growing for the last 8 months and I am pleased to share that we are expecting another little Truefitt this Autumn 🤍

As I start to reduce my working hours to prepare for baby, please be assured everything is running as normal and we have a wonderful team continuing to make everything happen across our school workshops, afterschool clubs, projects and performances ✨

👋 👋

We are busy getting ready to jump back into the Autumn Term as the academic year begins!

Magical Minds returns this Autumn, touring to 5 Primary Schools across Enfield & Barnet with thanks to the North Central East London (NCEL) CAMHS Provider Collaborative Grant Scheme ✨

Dance Artists Florencia Riverti , Natalie Watson & Kitty Pilgrim Morris will be performing Magical Minds, supported by our intern for the project Janaya Jackson-Williams. We are very happy that this fund has allowed to offer an internship for the first time so we can support more artists.

Each school will also receive 4 weeks of our Early Intervention through Dance and Mindfulness as part of our Teacher in Residency programme, where pupils are referred to sessions tailored to their specific wellbeing needs. We are looking forward to reaching new schools and supporting more pupils with their mental health & wellbeing this term ✨🤍

📣📣 We are delighted to announce Janaya Jackson-Williams as our new Intern in project management support for our upcoming Magical Minds Schools Tour Autumn 2024 🌟

Janaya is a London-based dance artist, beginning her dance journey at Glenlyn Dance Academy before immersing herself in street dance at the Inspired Youth Dance Company (IYDC).

Having now obtained a degree in diverse dance forms with a special interest in African and Caribbean traditional dance at IRIE dance theatre, Janaya is seeking to fuse these traditional practices with her street dance style. Her ambition is to not only further her professional dance career but to also explore and develop her newly found passion for backstage
production and project management for community arts which she discovered while producing her own independent pieces at IRIE dance theatre.

Welcome to the Magical Minds Team 🎉
