to a note someone put in my record bag in Moscow one time. It was at a NYE party gig at the UFO bar there. I actually didn’t spot it until a couple of weeks later when I emptied that bag to get it ready for another gig.

Russia was like that. People would give you gifts, notes, flowers. I used to love it.

One time a guy gave me this super bright LED torch. Like, he went to a hardware store, saw it, thought it would be a good gift for me and bought it to the club and gave it to me. I still have it. He was right.

I used to take around the Numark CDX’s (2nd slide)when we did the live show that were basically professional, high torque turntables that played CD’s. Meaning I could cut up and be creative with stems from our album tracks and incorporate them into the live show. There was things I couldn’t do at the time on CDJ’s as I needed larger, spinning platters to achieve them. They worked great (except when they didn’t) with minescule latency. It was the closest thing at the time I could find to real turntables for digital. All the scratches and some live sampling on our first album was done on these. They used to go wrong a lot though. Like A LOT a lot. They didn’t hold up well to traveling. I had to send them back to Numark every couple of months to be fixed. Luckily as we were being supported by them at the time (they never gave us any money so ‘sponsering’ would be the wrong term) I ussusly got them back pretty quick. I ended up dumping them for the live show and going back to CDJ’s. It was just easier. I didn’t fully trust having a laptop as part of the show at that point. We didn’t even have a laptop for the other electronic parts of the show away from the live band. It was all run on Akai MPC’s. But yeah, if they had been a little sturdier, the Numark CDX’s would have been up there in the Terry hall of DJ tech fame.

I kind of do and don’t miss stuff like this. I’m lucky enough to still play a few shows like this a year (well.. nothing is like Breakfest) and that keeps my inner super star DJ ego at bay.

But… and I have talked about it many times, the highs I used to get from being on the road and playing to massive crowds in beautiful places and the lows of coming home and walking round to tescos to in the rain to get my dinner (a silly little example of a mundane life) …were extreme. This is not be the case for everyone obviously. But for me it was stark. Now I actually enjoy my relitivly mundane life as it has purpose. My entire existence is not wrapped up in the next or last gig or tour. My mental health at this point was a fu***ng s**t show honestly. It’s not perfect now, but the purpose I have helps a lot. To know I can help others with my experience and guidance is worth more to me than almost anything. Platforming DJ’s and helping them achieve things that might have been out of their reach previously means everything to me.

I am purely talking about myself here. In no way would I transpose this against anyone else’s career that is out there touring and killing it. I know some DJ’s who are friends who have been out there for longer than me and are STILL doing it to a high level and are well adjusted and mentally healthy people.

All I’m really saying though is find purpose and balance.

Yesssss people.

We make our return to the almighty Radio in 2025. But this time, we have changed up the format a little. I thought it was a good idea to expand out the talent pool a little and invite DJ’s from all OVER this beautiful London, grassroots DJ scene. So not ONLY students this time, but dope, up and coming DJ’s both myself and have come across whilst we have been outside.
The DJ’s for the upcoming year will be hand picked from the cream of the crop of the wider comunity, all under the banner of .show

have a couple of very exciting new radio slots and take over coming up over the year. Watch this space for more info!!

To kick this new residency off, both myself and Lyvonne have picked 5 DJ’s we think are really doing it at the moment.

DJ skills and cheesy smiles is what I go for every time. Last lesson of the Sunday 8 week course yesterday and they all smashed. All the students walk away with their final mix, a certificate of completion and a radio set in 2025 on .radio or
Genres ranged from Footwork to Hip Hop to RnB to Jungle & DnB to Hard Trance. It was like a jamboree of genres yesterday in the studio. And I loved it. And I loved seeing all the students from this class and the Wednesday class walk away with big smiles on their faces and a new love/hobby/career on the horizon.

Next 8 week course starts in Feb. Super limited places on this one as I’m only doing the Sunday afternoons through the rest of winter. Only 3 places left. Link in bio.

A year of workshops.
This ain’t even close to being all of them. All in all I did about 48 workshops this year. Big and small. I did my last one of the year last night at for .show
I’ll be saving all the gushy thank you posts for Christmas as I do every year.

But thank you to the literal 100’s of DJ’s that came out. You all did amazing.

I don’t give a s**t what anyone says about this… I have been a DJ since the early 90’s… I have done everything I needed and ever dreamt of as a DJ. I have toured the world more times than I can remeber. I have used everything from cassettes to vinyl to CD’s to digital. I have lived an amazing existence as a professional DJ for over 25 years. I still love it and I always will. It has been the more constant and reliable thing in my life. So when these people say ‘everyone is a DJ now a days’ I say GOOD. Everyone should be a DJ. Everyone has the capacity to mix music they love. F**k elitism and exclusionary attitudes to this thing I love. I want to give it to everyone and I want everyone to love it. I want hands on decks.

Love music, love DJ’ing, love community and love yourself.

to an interview in a Japanese magazine. I remeber the press run well. The first day we did it, I had DJ’ed at a club in Tokyo the night before and to say I was hanging out my arse would be an understatement. There is a very funny story that will never make its way to social media that also happened the night before. So let’s just say, that day after is burned in my memory forever.

Good times. That first time we went to Japan it was all day doing press, all night playing gigs. Our album was in the top 10 national charts and our single was on the radio. Really mad times.
