The history of reggae music dates back to the late 1950s when “ska” was born. Ska (a precursor to reggae) was influenced by both Afro-Revival music and North American rhythm and blues which had infiltrated the island through imported records and radio broadcasts. The tempo, energetic and upbeat, served as a reflection of the national mood in Jamaica’s quest for independence. Still, as strife hit the country in 1966 and the country’s independence failed to materialize, the national mood shifted and so did the popular music.
Ska was followed by a short-lived“rocksteady” genre, followed by reggae, which entered the scene in 1968 and launched a musical revolution. A genre that demanded the voices of the suffering and oppressed be heard, reggae played a large part in transforming Jamaica’s national identity into a “conscious Black nation” with proud African heritage.
