In 1946, renowned photographer Nickolas Muray captured a striking image of the iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo during her visit to New York. By this time, Kahlo had already made a name for herself in the art world, celebrated for her deeply personal self-portraits that delved into themes of identity, pain, and Mexican culture. Muray, who shared a close personal relationship with Kahlo, was known for his ability to capture her essence. His photograph from this period highlights Kahlo’s distinctive features, such as her bold red lips, strong arched eyebrows, and traditional Mexican attire, blending artistic sensibility with intimate moments.

Kahlo’s time in New York was a pivotal chapter in her life, marked by both professional milestones and personal challenges. The city was a cultural hub for avant-garde art, and Kahlo’s visit further established her as a groundbreaking figure in the art world, particularly in her exploration of surrealism and folk art. Yet, the trip was also clouded by her ongoing health struggles and the complexities of her relationship with her husband, the famous muralist Diego Rivera. This blend of professional success and personal turmoil made Kahlo’s New York experience a significant period in her life.

Muray’s photograph not only captures Kahlo’s unique beauty but also reflects her indomitable spirit. His ability to photograph her as both an artist and a woman navigating the challenges of fame, love, and health offers a powerful glimpse into her complex persona. The image stands as a poignant reminder of Kahlo’s contributions to art and her lasting impact on cultural identity, showcasing the profound connection between the two and Muray’s skill in conveying her true essence.

Our Story

Dearest Curious Artist,

Hey. My name is Kelly Davies & I’m the owner & lead instructor at WONDERFUL. I wanted to write you this note so you have a better understanding of what WONDERFUL is. This art studio is so much more than just a place to learn to paint & draw; its a place for people ( kids & adults) to come together in an environment of silly, happy, peaceful acceptance. From our fun & creative AFTER SCHOOL ART CLUB for kids 1st grade & up to our ADULT PRIVATE PAINT & SIPS , WONDERFUL lends itself to making each & every artist feel like a master. If you stop into our studio, you’re sure to find me wandering around without shoes, covered in paint, & typically instructing a studio full of excited kids, & thats just how I like it, chances are the kids there won’t have shoes on either & we’ll probably have the music blasting as we dance & sing while creating our individual masterpieces. If you’ve experienced an adult event, there isn’t much of a difference, so if you’ve wanted to encourage your childs love of art or you yourself have been wanting to try something new, give me a call & we’ll chat about it, or stop into the studio- our door is always open. I hope to meet you soon new friend, until then, be well. - Kel D. For information on parties, team building events, after school art club, etc. please email me :: [email protected]
