Several of Vaughans will this weekend be at the Battle of Cheriton this weekend we hope they all return having an exciting weekend.

During the night and the early hours of the 29 March Waller dispatched troops to occupy Cheriton Wood and Hinton Marsh village on the east and west flanks of the field. Some time after sunrise Hopton discovered that Waller was not withdrawing but had occupied Cheriton Wood. The Royalists engaged their enemy in the wood and amidst much confusion, forced the Parliamentarians into retreat. This early defeat demoralised Waller's army and heartened the Royalists many of whom wished to engage with the Parliamentarians immediately. However, Forth held the day being of the opinion that they possessed the best ground and Waller would be forced to retreat or charge with the terrain to their disadvantage.
It would appear that some of the Royalists, possible enthused with their early advantage or acting on ambiguous orders, launched an attack on Waller's left flank heading for the village of Hinton Marsh. Meanwhile the Royalists were also continuing to press home their advantage on their right wing but may have pursued their foe to far as they were repulsed and were subsequently forced to give up the wood. At Hinton Marsh Waller's cavalry successfully drove back the impetuous Royalist advance and at the end of the morning Hopton was left to consider how his advantageous position had deteriorated and what to do next.

Hopton next committed the Royalist cavalry and took an early advantage as the Parliamentarians were forced into a disorderly retreat as their cavalry was unprepared for the attack. The Royalist cavalry then unsuccessfully charged Waller's cannon and there then ensued one of the longest cavalry battles of the civil war going on for most of the afternoon. Supported by Parliamentarian musketeers and aided by the loss of at least two of the Royalist cavalry commanders Waller's cavalry eventually drove the horse back.

The Parliamentarian foot now pressed home the advantage gained by their cavalry and within the course of an hour drove up the hill causing the Royalists to withdraw in disarray. The Parliamentarians had won the day.

The Royalist army retreated through Alresford, setting fires in the town, although only four or five houses were lost. They were apparently heading for WI******er but some distance to the west of Alresford they turned north heading for the Royalist stronghold at Basing House. The next day saw the Royalist army move to Reading.

The Parliamentarians pressed on to Wi******er and captured and sacked the city although Wi******er Castle was held by the Royalists. After attacking the Royalists at Newbury the Parliamentarians went on to capture Christchurch and the fortified manor house at Bishop's Waltham.

After the Battle
The village of Hinton Marsh is left smouldering and contemporary accounts describe the field as being strewn with bodies. However, whilst the exact number of dead is unknown the Parliamentarians believed they lost less than 60 men and the Royalists admitted to losing some 300 but denied accounts of 400 to 1000 dead. In reality the losses were probably about 300 - 500 on each side.

Only four to five houses were lost to fire in Alresford as the Royalists retreated despite their attempts to raze the town.

Hi All,

Thank you all for keeping me busy!
The last day to apply for memberships or temps for Much Marcle will be Tuesday 30thApril, then membership applications will be switched off until 7th May, giving me time to sort out the gatelist/passes etc and my own packing for the BH weekend.

If you know anyone who wants a Temp for Much Marcle, get them to apply sooner rather than later. If CO's could email preapproval it would save time.
So far, I have processed 44 temps for Much Marcle, 23 of them for Blew Regt, well done Harriet! Keep them coming!

Kind regards,

Christine Pearce
Membership Secretary
