Don't miss this great coming up soon!

Fifteen-Minutes-of-Fame featuring Monica Chew with Clavichord

Vox Novus is calling for one-minute pieces composed for clavichord. For this Fifteen-Minutes-of-Fame, we are looking for clavichord works specifically written for Monica Chew.

Works should be for written for clavichord. The range is from F1-F6. The lowest octave has an additional set of four-foot strings that vibrate sympathetically. This helps boost the bass range and can introduce wolf sounds when the four-foot strings are out of tune.

The clavichord is fully chromatic and double-strung. Some clavichords are double or triple-fretted, which allows 2 or 3 keys to share the same string (or pair of strings), saving space and tuning time. This means that certain chord clusters may be impossible to play. The clavichord is unfretted and can play in any key.

The clavichord is a quiet instrument and thus unsuited to chamber music. It is about as quiet as an acoustic guitar with an extended pianississimo range.

Selected works will be premiered in February 2024 on Fifteen-Minutes-of-Fame featuring Monica Chew.

This performance will be presented as a live streaming online concert and broadcasted to multiple streaming platforms such as YouTube and Facebook.

Only works one-minute in length for clavichord will be considered.

Guidelines:

-Deadline for works is November 15, 2023

-Works are for clavichord solo without electronic accompaniment.

-No works over one minute (60 seconds) will be reviewed.

-Works should be composed specifically for this call and performer.

-All pieces must be premieres.

-Multiple submissions are not accepted.

-Works need to be submitted online at www.MusicAvatar.org

-You will be able to upload a score as a PDF file

-You are also encouraged to upload an audio realization of the work

-Must include the dedication Monica Chew on the score.

-Performance notes should be included in the score.

-Selected works will be broadcasted online to multiple video streaming platforms including Facebook, YouTube, etc. No performance royalties will be paid.

-Selected composers will be asked to sign a consent form for an online performance and archival on streaming platforms. (Composers retain their author rights.)

Fifteen-Minutes-of-Fame featuring multi-instrumentalist David Bohn

The Taishogoto (also known as the Nagoya Harp or Peacock Harp) was developed in the early 20th century. It consists of a course of three (or four) melody strings, which are fretted via a sort of keyboard arrangement, and one (or occasionally two) drone strings. The bridge for the drone string(s) is on a lower level than the melody strings. The melody strings are tuned to G, in octaves. The range of the fretboard is from the G below middle C to the F two octaves higher, plus a high G. The Drone string(s) are tuned to G, an octave lower than the melody strings. The melody strings are normally strummed to play all three strings, although single-string playing is possible, to play only the lower or higher octave. It is not possible to play more than one note at a time on the melody strings.

A native of Wisconsin, David Bohn received degrees in composition from the University of Wisconsin, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and the University of Illinois. His primary composition teachers were Joel Naumann, Yehuda Yannay, and William Brooks. He has taught theory at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, University of Wisconsin - Parkside and the University of Illinois. In his career as an multi-instrumentalist, he has given World or American premieres of hundreds of keyboard works. Fifteen Minutes of Fame is 15 one-minute works by different composers written for a specific performer or ensemble.

Fifteen Minutes of Fame gives a variety of new music by living composers to audiences hungry to hear what is being created in today's music scene.

"...the 15 Minutes of Fame project of Vox Novus is a godsend. It organizes competitions whereby ensembles commission worldwide calls for submissions of approximately one-minute pieces, and then select their 15 favorites for premieres. The players, themselves emerging and without the funds for a traditional commission fee, get original works to present, while the likewise emerging composers get a chance for exposure and a premiere..." - Seth Gilman, NY Music Culture Examiner

Fifteen-Minutes-of-Fame was designed by producer and composer Robert Voisey to create an opportunity for composers to get their works performed and heard by audiences around the world.

The presentation of fifteen works in a short amount of time allows for the performance of composers works who would not normally get programmed on a chamber concert.

" The obvious strength of that approach is that it allows many composers to gain exposure in a short time span. But there is also an esthetic benefit... Since the pieces are performed in quick succession and each has a character of its own, the audience is treated to a kaleidoscope of styles; in turn textural and tonal, avant-garde and neo-romantic... like the entire smorgasbord of contemporary idioms was playing a game of musical chairs, so to speak, and the effect was thrilling. " - Damjan Rakonjac, Artificialist

Fifteen-Minutes-of-Fame featuring Stas Venglevski

Fifteen-Minutes-of-Fame will feature accordionist Stas Venglevski. Stas Venglevski will be performing 15 one-minute works written specifically for him and his bayan accordion. The Bayan is an accordion that was developed in Russia in the very late nineteenth century. It features a button arrangement for the both hands (instead of the keyboard and buttons arrangement on most Western accordions), offering a wider range. It shines its best in the classic repertoire, often giving a sound akin to a large pipe organ.

The composers selected for this set of Fifteen-Minutes-of-Fame are: Michalis Andronikou, David Bohn, Stephen de Filippo, John Kefala Kerr, Chihchun Chi-sun Lee, Rosita Piritore, Ryan Charles Ramer, Cornelia Schmid, David Unger, Robert Voisey, Anna Vriend, Willyn Whiting, Matthew Williamson, Yehuda Yannay, and Yuriy Zhikrivetskiy.

And more information can be found at the following:http://www.voxnovus.com/15_Minutes_of_Fame/featuring/Stas_Venglevski/

His artistry, dazzling technical command, and sensitivity have brought Stanislav, "Stas," Venglevski, a native of the Republic of Moldova, part of the former Soviet Union, increasing acclaim as a virtuoso of the Bayan. A two-time first prize winner of Bayan competition in the Republic of Moldova, Stas is a graduate of the Russian Academy of Music in Moscow where he received his Masters Degree in Music under the tutelage of the famed Russian Bayanist, Friedrich Lips. In 1992 he immigrated to the United States.

Stas is an Accordionist, a Musician, an Arranger, an Entertainer and a Teacher. Stas founded Accordion XXI Century Series in 2010 so that the Midwest audiences can experience the amazing range of the Accordion and Bayan by bringing gifted artists from all over the world. In a concert setting, these gifted musicians share their skills and cultures to provide the audience with a unique musical experience. The performances feature the Accordion or Bayan in solo presentation and, when possible, in concert with other instruments.
