CHAOS RESEARCH HUB starting on 20 October 2024 !!
|| A collaboration between Chaosmos and Incite Seminars

GROUP DESCRIPTION

Despite the modern obsession to control, chaos is everywhere around us. From wildfires to floods to never-ending wars: rationalism failed so drastically that it wouldn’t be a bad idea to start thinking upside down, namely that chaos—and not logos—is the actual Big Boss who can never be controlled. Instead of trying to control, we would be better off to figure out how to attune to chaos, and how to use its vast creative force to change the world.

Chaos Research Group is a fabulative, post-disciplinary research hub, taking as its starting point the primacy of chaos in the most ancient cosmologies. On top of that, ever since Nietzsche, chaos—and not logos—is of growing interest in contemporary philosophy. On top of that, chaos theory in physics is nowadays applied in various disciplines, not only in the natural sciences but throughout the humanities. What else?

We take these disciplines as mere materials to be used, compared and played with in a fantafuturistic setting where the distinction into academic disciplines has become obsolete. Moreover, there is no longer a difference between scientific research and artistic creation: in a world ruled by chaos, everything goes.

Feel free to register and join the group at any time. We meet every other Sunday online.

Readings/lectures/artworks/films, etc. will be proposed by the members of the group. Due to the vastness of the field, potential topics may include:

Comparative mythology
New Materialisms
Non-Philosophy
Deep Ecology
Anarchism
Self-organizing systems
Cybernetics
Chaos Theory
Psychedelics
Chaos Magick
Mysticism

Hurray!! our short films STRANGE VISITORS and UNDERGRASS will be screened at the 4th International Colloquium in Contemporary Philosophy and Culture at the University of Nagano, Japan | May 31- June 2 | Theme: Nature, Spirituality, and Culture

Set in an utopian/dystopian future after a global calamity, STRANGE VISITORS explores the potential of non-human agency in respect of the environmental crisis. A surrealist and dream-like sound&landscape transcending the anthropocentric notions of reality and love.

UNDERGRASS is a polyphony of stories locked in voices of humans and a bamboo forest in Águeda, Portugal. The film sprouted from a gathering for collective listening with the bamboo forest, exploring human-soil relations by sensing multiple deaths and (re)births.

Last week we joined the group exhibition Echoed Realms at Flutgraben, Berlin, with a multisensorial installation unlocking cross-species relations and polyphonies.

UNDERGRASS explored in situ the materialities and temporalities of two regenerative acts as part of the multi-sited and transmedial research in southern Europe by Eugenia Gianno 'Grassroots initiatives fertilizing eco-social futures of collective care and creativity in a planetary crisis'. Touching upon q***r ecology and care, the project hosted a con-sensual ritualistic act by Matteo De Blasio based on the adoption of limoni seeds, experimenting with interspecies kinship systems in a fanta-futuristic (im)possible institution.

The second of our series of regenerative acts took place with Tribojam Community in Alentejo, Portugal. This time, sonic vibrations would blossom from the soil, merging with experimental harvest songs for olive trees and sound recordings from the natural surroundings.

Tribojam is a self-organised community that values shared living and personal growth, experimenting with eco technology and permaculture for more sustainable futures, not least making space for multicultural encounters through collective composing and improvised music. Getting involved in the sound production and music making in a well equipped recording studio, we became part of the sound by exploring a selection of unique instruments to finally co-create a song. Each day we were juggling between experimental music, land art creation and permaculture gardening.

To initiate the spiral garden, we gathered in situ for a regenerative act of radical imagination and deep listening. This time, sonic vibrations would blossom from the soil, merging with experimental harvest songs for olive trees and sound recordings from the natural surroundings of Tribojam.

This Friday 26/05 Emmanuel Ofuasia and Hannes Schumacher will talk at the conference Postsecular Studies, Literature, and Care in Granada: DIE BEFORE YOU DIE: A DIALOGUE ON DEATH AND REBIRTH

Experimenting with real dialogue as a method for cross-cultural philosophy, we argue for death as the locus for a postsecular comparative philosophy of religion. While the ontologies of the later Heidegger and Nishida Kitarō from the Kyoto School suggest the equivalence or primacy of Nothing over Being, we focus on a passage by the Sufi poet Rumi:

I died as a mineral and became a plant,
I died as a plant and rose to animal,
I died as animal and I was man,
Why should I fear?
When was I less by dying?

Ofuasia points out a striking parallel to the doctrine of reincarnation in the teachings of Ọ̀rúnmìlà, the major authority of the Yoruba in West Africa. Schumacher, on the other hand, presents a different reading based on the experience of spiritual death in shamanic practices in light of the Sufi conception of fanāʾ. Once it is radical experience, once constant reflection on death which is not the opposite of life but gives profundity to it.

Emmanuel and Hannes will be joining online. Link to be confirmed.

Following Maurice Blanchot, the artist has to descend to the land of the dead in order to create an authentic work of art; in our view, this process involves a deep experience of profound loss and failure that questions our very sense of a self, of artistic creation and even art itself, resulting, thus, in a feminist turn from philosophy to mysticism, from creativity to care. The old obsession of the artist/philosopher to create and control simply can no longer cope with a vulnerable life out of boundaries, a life which has become unable to be mastered. However, we believe that artistic creation is able to attune itself to these new matters of care, that artistic work can be care work if it is able to adapt to slower, calmer moves like a tortoise, or that the loss of a self is rather a stretching of it, an expanded self which both cares and creates, or creates with care.

Inspired by the unique surroundings of our artistic residency at Projecto Agit Lab, we organised a gathering for collective listening inside the bamboo forest, Águeda, Portugal.

In the past months we had many encounters with the interconnections of death and (re)birth that we would like to share. This gathering as a regenerative act was an invitation to exchange our feelings, to attune to one another and to re-connect with our belly-button selves.

Tonight 20:00 premiere of Marius new bimonthly show on Athens own Fade Radio. Marius used to be a regular at Chaosmos, both as a DJ and performing musician. With Echei Kinisi ( cover artwork Katerina Rotoli ) we are finally allowed again to be annoyed by his exaggerated excitement for weird music. Make sure to tune in.
