Big news! The Rockwell House is for sale! This has been an amazing journey, and we feel so lucky to have been the ones to bring the house back to life, but as our lives have taken us away from Milledgeville and on to other adventures, it's time to find the next steward. We are selling the business along with the house including furniture, fixtures, equipment, database of previous guests, future bookings, website, social media accounts, and marketing collateral. The property still has so much undeveloped potential, and we are excited to see what the future has in store.

This 6500 square feet Single Family home has 6 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms. It is located at 402 Allen Memorial Dr SW, Milledgeville, GA.

Did you catch us on the news this morning? :)

You can still see some of the embers embedded in the floor upstairs from a 1969 fire.

We have a new look! Rockwell House has a new dress…a wedding dress to be specific. We loved the historic yellow but as we have leaned more into the event venue business, we’ve received overwhelming feedback that more brides would prefer a white house, which means more revenue for ongoing preservation, wages for employees, and community engagement. We compromised and changed the siding color only, leaving the historic trim color. We hope you love it too! Click the link in bio to book a stay or an event 😇❤️

Before & After ~ Col. Samuel Rockwell House, Milledgeville, GA, restored to its original 1838 yellow and tan paint scheme.

Photos by Leland Kent.

Designed by architect Joseph Lane and built in 1838 for Colonel Samuel Rockwell, the house is transitional Federal to Greek Revival style. The tan and yellow is its original paint scheme as documented by cross-section microscopy historic paint analysis.

It was occupied by several owners until 1962 and then remained vacant for some years. Following a fire in the late 1960s, new owners restored the house and lived there for several decades.

Vacancy and neglect in recent years left the house again in need of restoration. In 2019, three young investors restored the house for use as an inn and wedding/event center (RockwellHouseGA.com).

Many more before and after photos, including interior views, can be found at: https://www.rockwellhousega.com/about-rockwell-house/preservation/

Every house can't be saved, some genuinely are too far gone to be saved, but many homes are destroyed every year that could have been preserved. Knowing it is possible is often the critical first step toward accomplishing something good.

I wrote "Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners" to help people know what is possible and how to achieve it.

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author at YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/ and through the shop on this page.

Our shop also carries select preservation and restoration titles by other authors. Save on cost and shipping with our multi-book combo packs!

Did you know you can visit one of Rockwell’s rooms… 750 miles from Milledgeville? In 1969, Henry Francis du Pont’s acquired elements from one of our twin dining rooms to recreate the room at their museum in Delaware. The installation of the “Georgia Dining Room” at the Winterthur Museum was completed in 1972. Of the 175 period rooms installed at the museum, the Georgia Dining Room is considered by many to be the “most accurate.” du Pont wished to have a period room from each of the 13 original colonies, and the plans to purchase the room from Rockwell were put in place just before he passed away. In our restoration work, we were able to recreate the woodwork and mantle with the help of 3D printing.

This dollhouse replica of Rockwell was made for Frances Ennis Couch, who grew up in the house. For years it was displayed at Frances’s family jewelry store Couch’s Jewelers in Anniston, Alabama. The Ennis family first purchased the home in 1914. Fun fact: The Rockwell House goes by many names. One is “Beaumont”, which is what the Ennis family called it.
