Tuesdays through Fridays, the harbor comes alive with different bands performing on the hotel’s floating barge stage. “A Brockton teacher found the formula to grow a social media platform - and it was all by accident. The teacher of 26 years used TikTok as a way to connect with his class during the COVID pandemic to keep them engaged. The app, for him, was just a tool but now has blossomed into something more.

“Growing up in Brockton, at 14 years old, I was writing my own songs; music was my first love, and I always wanted to be an entertainer and perform,” Fortes said.

This deep love for music has stayed with Fortes all of his life. On the weekends, he coaches three different sports and DJs at weddings and corporate events. The TikTok video that blew up was a remix of Empire State of Mind by Jay Z and Alicia Keys but with a twist about Brockton.

Suggested by his peers, Fortes made a remix to the song to show how powerful the City of Champions is despite its rugged reputation.

Once the video started to gain traction, the viewer count grew to over 32,000 views and 12,000 people followed the teacher.

“I didn’t join TikTok to grow fame or anything like that but a way to connect with the kids instead of just looking at them through a computer screen,” Fortes said.

A cool fact about the TikTok video is that Fortes recorded it over 10 years ago, uploaded it to YouTube, and gained almost 38,000 views. What amazed him was how fast the video grew on TikTok in a matter of days versus 10 years on YouTube.”
