Thirty years after political liberation, we have seen the development of a new culture in our body politic: Voter Silence.

Political debate was the hallmark of our struggle for liberation - This at a time when it was not cheap to talk politics - indeed it was often deadly to analyze or criticize powerful politicians and their policies. National, provincial, regional, zonal and local political leaders were products of these town hall political debates.

We seek to revive this culture in Qonce, in the lead-up to, the May 29 elections. We aim to re-ignite community participation, involvement and engagement by empowering the electorate with information for them to make quality decisions on May 29. The character of the debates must be lively, robust, with substance but no violence.

Amava Heritage Publishing, and the Steve Biko Foundation have set up a weekly series of Community Empowerment Election Debates featuring different political parties in Qonce.

The first will be held on Wednesday 10 April starting promptly at 17h30, at the Steve Biko Centre in Ginsberg and subsequent debates will follow weekly on Wednesday evenings.
