With the transition from the Blue ID to the Green Barcoded ID, the ID numbers of spouses were not automatically linked on the Department of Home Affairs’ computer system.

Why This Matters:
• For Widows/Widowers: If one spouse passes away, the surviving spouse may still be listed as MARRIED instead of Widow/Widower. This can prevent the finalization of your estate.

• Urgent Action Needed: This issue needs to be checked and corrected urgently. The Department of Home Affairs will not address it unless an inquiry is made.

PRINTED MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE: ALL MARRIED COUPLES

Do you have a PRINTED Marriage Certificate from Home Affairs

If not get one ASAP. As a Marriage Officer I am not allowed to issue handwritten ones anymore as Bank, Insurance and Medical Aids insist on the printed one. When you die and your estate needs to be sorted will also need a PRINTED Marriage Certificate.

It cannot be printed after the registration of a death of one of the partners – then you must apply for an Unabridged Certificate that can take months to get.
