Discover the Hidden Magic of Swellendam

It always surprises me that many Swellendammers pack their bags at Christmas time and go off on their holidays to share crowded beaches or cramped caravans and tents when Swellendam is brimming with magic and wonder—there are so many enchanting experiences waiting to be discovered right in our backyard.

This year, there are some very special magical elements and events that make Swellendam such a unique and wondrous place to be. You can explore the Hidden Dragon Garden, a secret oasis that sparks the imagination and transports you to a world of fantasy. And don't miss the Living Golden Statues, who will be at the Christmas Market on December 20th, beautifully depicting historical stories, offering a unique and captivating experience for both children and adults.

Where else can you follow Father Christmas —accompanied by the stunning Zolani Choir and a group of very special vintage cars—through the streets of town to end up at the magical Under the Oaks Market, filled with crafts, delicious food and beverages, and smiling, happy people?

Have you ever visited the Faerie Sanctuary, where folklore comes alive amidst the flora, inviting you to believe in the unseen? Or perhaps you've heard tales of the Drostdy Museum Ghost, adding an eerie yet fascinating layer to our town's rich history. According to local lore, the ghost is believed to be that of a former resident or someone associated with the old gaol (jail) that was part of the Drostdy complex. Paranormal enthusiasts have reported sightings and unexplained occurrences within the museum, adding an eerie yet fascinating layer to its historical significance.

The Christmas Lights in the main street are, as always, spectacular, and even though there hasn’t been a formal Switch-On Ceremony for a few years, the excitement , music and buzz at the Market goes some way to make up for that missing piece. Let’s get the Municipality to work some magic for next year so we can celebrate the traditional Lights Festival.
