It was my intention to do a short post about the opportunist aspect of being in a cannabis career or canna-centric business. In conversations with women in the cannabis space each talks about the opportunities to introduce people to cannabis as a better, more effective alternative to prescription drugs, opportunities to create a legacy for their family, opportunities to bring about positive change on a personal, community and national level.
First I Googled the definition of “opportunist”: a person who exploits circumstances to gain immediate advantage rather than being guided by consistent principles or plans.
The two keywords are “exploits” and “principles”. In the time it took you to read that sentence you thought of at least three companies and numerous people who are notorious opportunists in the cannabis industry. Their business approach is “it’s not personal, it’s just business,” as if that is justification for their exploitation and lack of principles.
It is personal. It is personal to anyone trying to advance their career, develop a business or achieve financial stability for their company. It is personal to customers and clients. It is personal to medical ma*****na patients. It is personal to me.
The cannabis industry and space continues to offer an abundance of opportunities and possibilities. Embrace the opportunities and bring principles, accountability and heart into the industry. Don’t hesitate - the person next to you may be a serial opportunist!
