Still I Rise
BY MAYA ANGELOU
You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
’Cause I walk like I've got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I'll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops,
Weakened by my soulful cries?

Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don't you take it awful hard
’Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines
Diggin’ in my own backyard.

You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.

Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I've got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?

Out of the huts of history’s shame
I rise
Up from a past that’s rooted in pain
I rise
I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.

Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.

The windows to my soul are wet
Amidst my hearts warmness
In dew time
Kids shall draw joys on them with their lives
And I'll have a happy drought
For now lids serve as umbrellas
And hope dances in the rain! -Lesedi Nice

“Coming down the mountain path,
I find something
endearing about violets.”

CSP
Class of 2021

Another cycle complete... the year still harbours the residual crud of a crippling pandemic, theatres weathered another blow, anxiety unsettled the industry. Not long ago, art spaces were to be closed, and when open, they were only to operate at minimum capacity. 11 months into what we had welcomed as a promising year, we are still to unearth all that we have lost. While the dust is still settling, we remain not only hopeful but grateful for all we have found.
The class of 2021 comes bearing gifts. An offering of poetry, to aid us during these pressing times. Six poets make up this class of assuring writers. Having accumulated skills through a multitude of practice, poets were put through writing and performance workshops in an effort to hone their skills and shape them into prolific practitioners of their craft. These are some of the best poets Joburg has to offer. Over 150+ poets auditioned for this class, and here we are, with just a few of the poets who remained the course of this journey:
Melissa Moyo, Khayalethu Mguzulo, Nomalungelo Madywabe, Jonathan Lefenya, Mangala Mangala, Noluthando Mkhungo, Zandile Carol.
Though the journey has proven to be challenging, “the class of 2021” has shown admirable strength, and character. We commend their eagerness to learn and to find the courage to keep going, even in the depths of despair. Their desire to grow and improve has led them to this day, along with all the lessons learned in their stumbles.
From initiation to completion, CSP has converted many writers into esteemed poets, and this batch of orators is ready to ascend to the pinnacle of their voices. From their seedling debut, now in full blossom.

On this 06th November this talented crop of poets will be showcasing their work on the CSP stage; it promises to be a day of wonder.
Show starts at 14:00 to 16:30.

Tickets go for a R100.

A longing and pounding in my heart
Led me to want so much more out of life
Now I am free
Yes I hold my head up high
The burden on my shoulder is no longer with me
Now I can breathe
Yes I feel so much at ease
My soul is alright with me

Need I remind
Anyone again that
Armed struggle
Is an act of love

I might break into song
Like the bluesman or troubadour
And from long distance
In no blues club
I might say
Baby baby baby
There is no point in crying
Just because just because I’m not at home

When I try to run away from song
Walking softly in the night
A persistent voice

Who has gone farthest? for I would go farther, And who has been just? for I would be the most just person of the earth, And who most cautious? for I would be more cautious, And who has been happiest? O I think it is I—I think no one was ever happier than I, And who has lavish'd all? for I lavish constantly the best I have, And who proudest? for I think I have reason to be the proudest son alive—for I am the son of the brawny and tall-topt city, And who has been bold and true? for I would be the boldest and truest being of the universe, And who benevolent? for I would show more benevolence than all the rest, And who has receiv'd the love of the most friends? for I know what it is to receive the passionate love of many friends, And who possesses a perfect and enamour'd body? for I do not believe any one possesses a more perfect or enamour'd body than mine, And who thinks the amplest thoughts? for I would surround those thoughts,

Some are teethed on a silver spoon,
With the stars strung for a rattle;
I cut my teeth as the black raccoon—
For implements of battle.

Some are swaddled in silk and down,
And heralded by a star;
They swathed my limbs in a sackcloth gown
On a night that was black as tar.

For some, godfather and goddame
The opulent fairies be;
Dame Poverty gave me my name,
And Pain godfathered me.
