Dr Love ❤️ — The Comeback Nobody Expected

Dr Love is back, the comeback no one ever expected to happen and probably shouldn’t, but here it is anyway. Cape Town, consider yourselves warned.

Dr Love was the founder of the infamous Cheese Parties, those wild celebrations of 70s style debauchery, hedonism and all round frivolity. He was an old school selector who played funk, soul, disco and groove with generous lashings of cheese, from obscure TV themes to forgotten glitter-ball classics and a bit of Vegas razzmatazz. When it came to mixing he was more of a mixer of cocktails than a mixer of records, but somehow his selections always lit up any dancefloor.

Discovering the joys of house music, he stepped back from the decks and threw himself into promoting legendary events across South Africa through Essential Mix, Global Groove and other nights that became key places of unity in the house community. These parties were vibrant, joyful and are now legendary for a reason. For Dr Love they became an education in the culture, heartbeat and humanity of house.

He organised events across the country, working with pretty much every South African house legend along the way, and later expanded to bring in international pioneers from crucial house music cities. From DJ Diz in Chicago to Eric Rug in Paris, from Cyril K to Derrick Carter, Charles Webster, Tim Paris, Deep Dish, Fred Everything, Jef K and many others, he listened, he learned, he understood and every now and then he even had a little boogie. And yes, some questionable life choices were made along the journey, but of course always for research purposes only.

Now with time to reflect on an incredible path through Cape Town and global house culture, he is putting together a daytime, sunshine set of the legendary tracks that defined a generation and moved a nation. Expect the anthems you heard at beach parties, rooftops, braais and after parties, the tunes that shaped entire summers and brought people together at a time when freedom felt brand new. If you hear them now they will still make your skin tingle with memories of those carefree, beautiful days.

Unashamedly nostalgic, joyfully sentimental and full of heart, Dr Love is back to remind you why we all fell in love with house music in the first place.

Tickets are running out fast and there are only two days left before the ticket price goes up. If you’re joining us, now’s the time to lock it in.

We’re building up to December with another DJ reveal from the family — and this one’s special. Cape Town’s original queen of deep house and techno, Lady M, returns to Long Street for Back to the Old House: The Sunflower Sessions.

LADY M Lady M

Cape Town’s original queen of deep house and techno, Lady M has been holding it down behind the decks since her vinyl-spinning teenage years. One of the youngest DJs in the scene back in the day, she soon surpassed her mentors, growing into an incredible artist, learning and evolving with every step. With roots between South Africa and the Seychelles and Berlin summers that shaped her sound, rhythm runs deep in her veins.

Her sets move from deep driving and hypnotic to raw and soulful, always focused on flow, energy and connection. Every mix is a journey for body, mind and soul.
The first female South African electronic artist to release a solo record (Solitude EP, 2013), Lady M has since dropped a steady stream of EPs and remixes on labels like Katermukke, Triplefire Music and Magique Music. She has shared stages with the likes of Charlotte de Witte, Black Coffee, Steve Bug and Roman Flügel, always matching the energy, never chasing the hype.

A resident at both Modular Cape Town and ToyToy Joburg, she is the force behind Elevation, a night that keeps the underground alive with extended sets, fresh talent and a pure music-first policy.

For Back to the Old House, this one is personal — a return to her roots in house music, where it all began and where the journey continues.

🎟 Tickets are limited and priced for the community — no VIPs, no velvet ropes, just family.

🌻 DJ Reveal — Rudi
The Groove Guardian
Some DJs are legends./ Some DJs are storytellers. And then there is Rudi, the man who somehow manages to be both and the unofficial Chief Handbag Dodger of the early 2000s.

Rudi Abrahams,
Cousin of the slightly more famous Peter (we are not picking sides), Rudi spent his Saturdays at the legendary Fez Club navigating flying purses, strobe lights and questionable fashion choices while delivering grooves that kept the whole place moving. The Fez was notorious for good vibes and good beats and Rudi was right in the centre of it all.

A comedian by nature but a serious selector at heart, Rudi has been collecting music since Deep House was basically still Disco. He never took the vinyl oath like his cousin ("how is that oath tasting now cuz?") and to this day he insists the sync button might be the greatest innovation since the invention of the direct drive turntable. He is that old in all the best possible ways.

He is profoundly grateful that social media did not exist back then which is lucky for everyone. Rudi knows where all the bodies are buried but he will never tell. He is funny but not foolish.

These days the man has a proper day job which means he rarely gigs. We will not judge him for that. We are just grateful that for one night he has stepped forward as the advocate for the defence of pure good times. And trust us when Rudi gets behind the decks he brings enough evidence to sentence the dancefloor to an evening of pure groove-out bliss.

He might be a funny guy but he is completely serious about good times and even more serious about his music.

🎶 Expect a deep musical journey, decades of rhythm, generations of groove and destination good times.

Today Marks the exact amount of months I did the Sober Journey back in 2018……..

Now that I’ve crossed the 50 year mark in my Journey thru Life, I’ve acknowledged that I don’t need alcohol to be social or even when I’m performing as a DJ…….

What I’ve taken from this experience is that it’s a Mindset and most importantly A Choice 👍🏼

Life is Hard and we use certain crutches to suppress dealing with it……
In the end we Choose how to deal with Life and what it throws at Us 🙏🏽

“Ladies and gentlemen, get ready to move your feet and feel that heat! The man with the horn of steel and the heart of soul, Mr. Dan Shout is Coming Back to the Old House

Dan Shout was more than just a guest at the legendary Essential Mix parties. He was the secret ingredient, his soulful yet funky sax playing together with the DJs and the crowd created something entirely new. His sound became a bridge between genres and generations, lifting the night to another level.

A true member of the community and an original house devotee, Dan understands where the sound comes from, how jazz, soul, blues and disco intertwined to create the most open and equal of all musical forms: house music.

Zimbabwean-born, Namibian-raised, and Cape Town-based, Dan Shout has spent over two decades taking that same energy to the world. He’s performed in more than 30 countries across five continents, sharing stages with icons like Johnny Clegg, Winston Mankunku, Maria Schneider, and Nils Landgren. His journey has taken him from the House of Blues in Los Angeles to the North Sea Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, and even Bastille Day in Paris.

Yet, no matter how far he travels, Dan’s spirit remains rooted in the Cape Town dancefloors where music first brought people together, those same roots we celebrate at Back to the Old House.

We’d hate for you to miss out — tickets go up in 3 days.
Secure your place now and come be part of this beautiful December gathering of music, memories and love.
