Tell us a little about you! Who you are, where you are from, etc!
I'm Tharien Moolman, also known as Thrientjie. I'm 35 years old, born in Welkom, Free State, and raised in the charming Valley of Riebeek-Kasteel, Western Cape. My heart beats with a deep passion for the beauty industry, and nothing brings me more joy than making my clients feel absolutely stunning.
Is there a specific moment or experience that solidified your passion for makeup?
Yes, indeed! Eight years ago, I had the opportunity to create the makeup look for a very special young lady's matric farewell. Her reaction was absolutely priceless to me. That particular moment was truly special — I'd even go as far as calling it an 'A-ha' moment.
Any self-care rituals to recharge amidst the fast-paced industry?
I always prioritize self-care to recharge in the midst of the fast-paced industry. After all, I am my own advertisement. I indulge in mini DIY spa days, and recently, I've incorporated exercise into my routine
Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of makeup?
I have a passion for painting. Creativity is part of every day for me, drawing inspiration from social media, people, my work, and nature. Additionally, I enjoy dancing and simply being silly.
Can you share a bit about your creative process?
My creative process typically begins with a consultation with the client. It's like a mini tea session where I aim to understand their preferences, personalities, and more. Following that, I analyze the client's face, and from there, a specific image and vision take shape in my mind for the desired look.
Any mentors or individuals who have influenced your journey?
I've been fortunate to have several mentors and individuals who have played a significant role in shaping my journey. Michelle Smith, The Look Salon in Montana, FDK Styling, my late cousin Cherise Myburg, my grandparents, parents, daughter, close friends, family, business partner (Die Kameraman), and my husband have all been instrumental. These mentors have imparted valuable lessons in patience, strength, determination, perseverance, and self-confidence.
What are some of the biggest lessons you've learned throughout your career?
Some of the most significant lessons I've learned throughout my career include never giving up. Mistakes are essential for learning and self-improvement. Each day presents a new learning experience. It's crucial to be true to yourself, avoid changing for others, and, most importantly, believe in yourself.
How do you handle criticism or negative feedback?
I embrace criticism wholeheartedly. It's a vital tool for self-improvement. Actively seeking criticism is my approach because there's always room for growth and enhancement.
Any makeup trend or technique you initially doubted but eventually embraced?
I've learned not to overcomplicate the process. Every client is unique, with different faces and features. What works for one client may not work for another. The key is understanding your client and their features. By doing so, success is achievable in the end.
How do you nurture your creativity and push the boundaries of your work?
Nurturing creativity and pushing the boundaries of my work is integral to my life. I challenge myself every day, experimenting with various looks on both myself and personal models. I love exploring a spectrum of colors and styles. Staying up-to-date with trends on social media and watching tutorials from fellow artists also keeps my creativity flowing.
