Today marks a very special anniversary for the East London Museum: 85 years ago, on 22 December 1938, our first curator and director, Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer, made a decision that rewrote history, and put East London in the world map!

She decided to go down to the East London harbour and, as was her habit, inspected Captain Hendrik Goosen's daily catch on the fishing vessel, Nerine.

Here, half-buried under other fish, the brilliant, curious young woman made one of the 20th century's most significant discoveries: a coelacanth, the dinosaur fish thought to have been extint for centuries.

Despite the heat - it was a swelteringly hot day - Dr Courtenay-Latimer managed to persude a local taxi driver to take the large, smelly fish to the museum. Lacking the facilities to preserve the specimen intact, she had the foresight to have the organs removed and the animal stuffed. She then made a sketch and together with a short description sent it to Dr J L B Smith, an ichthyologist at Rhodes University in Grahamstown.

The rest, of course, is history.

On this very special day, as we get ready to bid farewell to 2023, the East London Museum thanks everyone who visited, supported and engaged with our facility, in person or on our social media platforms, over the past year.

The whole village of Stanford could easily be mistaken for a Hollywood film set, thanks to the authenticity of Stanford's unspoilt history.

No flashing back-lit signs are permitted and the village green has remained in tact, protected by the town's proclaimed heritage status

On 15th December this village green will be hosting its monthly sunset market earlier than its usual month end Friday slot.

All the stoep night markets will be glittering beneath the spectacular Christmas light display stretching the length of Queen Victoria Street.

The Christmas lights were installed by Platform SA commissioned by Checkers SA for the village of Stanford. A gift of pure love ❤️ when it meant the most.
