The story of Indestructible beats

Indestructible Beats is a clubnight (or indibano) co-founded by DJs/selectors Ra Mava and ben v. The name is partly taken from the compilation series of records released in the 1980s (shoutout to DJ Jumbo!) that helped music labelled as maskandi, mbaqanga or Zulu Jive get heard outside of southern Africa. Originally established in 2014 at Tagore's Jazz Bar in Observatory (Cape Town), after Tagore's closure, a monthly residence moved nextdoor to Cafe Ganesh. There sessions got crowds moving for over three years (and still pop up from time to time).

On a given night, the records selected at Indestructible Beats transcend borders to show in sound how rhythms from Soweto or Lesotho or KZN (and on and on!) can be woven with those from Detroit or London and northwards up the continent. The flow and selection of vinyl moves energetically in multiple directions: afrobeat, kwaito, maskandi, sotho, afro-funk, hip-hop, highlife, jazz, reggae+dub, neo-soul, house…

Now in mid-2019, Hometown (in Woodstock) has become a new place/space for Indestructible Beats to keep on in Cape Town. Sessions every month with resident DJs: Ra Mava, ben v and JoyMode. Guests so far also include DJ Ntone and Flames Shilowa (Fly Machine Sessions) to ignite the dance. Next gathering coming Saturday 24th August 2019 with BŪJIN, more info now-now!
