Last week I was tasked to shoot the 2023 SA Car of the Year test days for the awesome folk at SAGMJ. There’s such a big variety of finalists that I’m way happier being behind the lens and documenting the proceedings instead of being a judge. That’s the real hard work – having to accurately rank the 21 finalists to single out an overall winner. How do you compare an Audi RS e-Tron GT that retails for a cool R3 300 000 to a Volkswagen Taigo that’s listed at less than R430 000. The same goes for the bakkies, they’re all so damn good now that picking a winner is mission impossible, but you can’t deny that new Ford Ranger is worthy of a top pick. Then there’s all the cars using new technologies, the electric era is slowly creeping in, and the offerings are already really, really good considering how young the tech is in the grand scheme of things. All those naysayers who spit when you mention an electric car will need to change their minds soon because entry-level EVs can already match the 0-100 km/h sprints quicker than ICE sportscars, and the EVs that are centred on performance will peel your eyelids off if you mash the (loud?) pedal to the floor.
The shooting started off with static shots of each one of the finalists at La Wiida Lodge, then progressed to Zwartkops Raceway for the driving evaluations on the big track, the skidpan and the 4x4 track, ending off with real-world testing on the road. As a result, this album is quite big, but if there are any cars you like in the finalist list, you might come across a cool image of it in action. There’s over 700 pics in chronological order (apart from the first few out of order to make the album preview better), but that’s quite normal for coverage, y’all should know this by now. A huge thanks to the SAGMJ for this fun one, and big up to Old Mutual Insure for joining the prestigious event as headline sponsor. I can’t wait to see the results, I have a feeling which car may win, and I have my favourites for personal reasons, so it will be interesting.
