From South Africa to the World with the support from the local industry.

As a Youth, Josh Johnson has held a South African National title in every cycling discipline on the road and mountain bike, including winning the three major road races as a u/17: Cape Town Cycle Tour, 94,7 Ride JoBurg and Amashova Classic. His victories extend the border having won on the mountain bike in Switzerland and on the road in Belgium, Netherlands and France. His performances this year saw him being Nominated as Junior Sportsman of the Year at the KZN Sports Awards.

It is not just his “on the bike” antics but his personality off the bike - well spoken, welcoming, funny, mature and knowledgable of the sport, his training and race craft showcase real professionalism beyond his years.

Josh’s stand out event was one he didn’t even podium at - Le Pevele Classic is considered the Paris Roubaix for u/17 where he lead a field of 167 riders into the first cobble section having never ridden cobbles before. Unfortunately whilst in the winning breakaway of 7 riders with 15km to go Josh got a puncture and not speaking French was unsure if the service vehicle had the right gearing on the spare wheel so chose to ride on the flat. Hanging onto the pack for 10km before they managed to get away - Josh still crossed the line 28th. This performance saw Josh being contacted by multiple team managers eager to recruit him.

Its been a long road to get to this point in such a young career. Dad (Andrew) meticulously planned each international race to strategically position Josh at the highest attended races as well as races where the biggest names in European Junior cycling would be competing in the aim of getting noticed and to this point - signing with one of the World’s Top Junior teams(official announcement to be made soon).

The path to this achievement has been paved not only by hard work and dedication of Josh and the family but also by the invaluable support of key partners. Josh’s growth and performance has been nurtured by the Ballito based DriveTrain Academy led by coach Ty White. Ty has been a cornerstone in Josh’s development as well as several other athletes on the verge of following suit.

With so many opportunities and avenues to spend marketing budget for Trek South Africa, signing a 15 year old with a contract in excess of R400 000 seemed very risky. However, it was less of a gamble and more of a calculated investment into a youth athlete who showed the potential and work ethic with the results both locally and internationally to not only justify the spend but exceed expectations.

Partnering with CIOVITA was essential as we knew the importance they would play in not only creating high quality technical kit for the aerodynamics of road racing as well as providing warmth to conquer the European cold but the added bonus of brand exposure for all the partners involved in this journey.

Josh was identified by KZN Cycling and received support through the EADP(Elite Athlete Development Program) for the past two years where he has been able to incorporate off the bike strength and conditioning. Every brand has had a strategic role to play through power meters from Sigeyi, head units from Garmin, recovery products from Hyperice, nutrition from Bioteen, eyewear from 100%, regular bike services from OnTrack Cycles, to silent partners like Shiptech Petroleum who provided financial backing and Red Bull providing content creation.

These partnerships are a testament to the power of collaboration in building future champions. The cycling community in South Africa can take pride in the role they have played in fostering young talent and helping athletes like Josh reach the highest level of the sport. Andrew added “The reality is, Josh wouldn’t be in the position he’s in today if it weren’t for these businesses, the people behind them, as well as family and community. The path is possible, although it’s far harder for Africans and nearly impossible without local industry support."

The future is exciting for Josh and we eagerly await the team to make the official announcement!

A solid weekend of results to close out some seasons!

Shanae Williams made the trip to Brazil for one final World Cup in the Sprint discipline. She had a strong swim coming out the water 5th leading the chase pack as two ladies had broken away. There was a very long run to transition and she nailed her bike mount with a 20sec deficit to close on the leaders. Shanae put in a big effort on the bike to try close the gap and in doing so had the 3rd fastest bike leg of the race. Heading into the run she would start to feel the effort on the bike but still digging deep to come across the line in 10th only 1min39sec off the podium finishers. A awesome result to end off the season!
Swim - 750m - 10:27
Bike - 20km - 30:02
Run - 5km - 19:37
Total - 1:01:30

Daniel Van Der Watt headed up to Johannesburg for the Ride Joburg 50km mountain bike race. He was expecting a hard race but at 28,9km/h average speed he was on his limit the whole way through. With cramps setting in he tried a last ditch effort to make an attack on the final climb 5km out from the finish but was reeled in and counter attacked finishing a strong 6th overall in 1:41:32. Time for a break before focusing on the 2025 XCO season.

Ernie Roets was invited by Keagan Bontekoning to join the Insect Science MTB squad for Wines2Whales. This was Ernie’s first stage race and he was looking forward to the 3 days from Somerset West to Hermanus. Thankfully Keagan was there to show him the ropes and also rein him in a little (he is a very excitable XCO racer) letting him know that it is a long 3 days. They finished day one in in a strong 6th position. Day two the legs were feeling the effort of the portage on Gantouws Pass but in typical Ernie fashion he continued to turn the pedals and finished in 8th for the day. It must have been knowing that he was heading to the finish but he found extra motivation for the final day and had a great ride finishing 5th in a sprint finish. 6th on General Classification was a very strong first stage race performance.

A successful defence of their Wines2Whales Title for Tyler Jacobs and Candice Lill

Having spent the year traveling together whilst competing on the UCI XCO World Cup circuit as an u/23 and Elite respectively - the dynamic duo once again teamed up for the 3 day race from Lourensford Wine Estate through Elgin and finishing at Benguela Cove in Hermanus. It was a solid performance with three stage wins from three with only one minor mishap on day two when a wrong turn was taken and Candice stopped to turn around and… well… Tyler didn’t and rode straight into Candice - worth a good laugh at the end of the day and didn’t stop them from spraying the victory champagne.

A great way to end off a long and strong season as both riders head into a much deserved break before getting back to base ahead of what looks like an even longer XCO World Cup season next year.

It’s the tough events that create learning and growth.

Malakai Hagley represented Team England at the GB Cup against surfers from Wales, Scotland and the Channel Islands. Conditions were incredible however Malakai struggled with rhythm throughout the event making uncharacteristic errors but still managing to advance through to the semi finals before narrowly missing out - a consolation was Team England walked away as overall victors!

Massi Ambrosi raced two UCI Elite Cyclocross events in Boston. One hour flat out efforts combined with big barriers and a beach sand section mixed with over 40 riders all squeezing for the inside lines bashing bars. Massi was moving forward until he was crashed into on the last lap and had to chase back to finish 15th in the Cat1 race on Saturday. Sundays Cat2 race saw the course being ridden in the opposite direction, the legs from the day before effort and some gearing issues saw Massi finishing 22nd. Fun weekend racing a new discipline.

Matthew Healy The podium finishers at the Javelina Jundred - a 100mile(161km) trail run through the Arizona Desert would receive a Golden Ticket to the Western States. The race started off well and Matt worked his way up to 5th place. Around 97km Matt’s legs started to shut down, mentally and energy wise was feeling strong but just couldn’t get it to transfer into his legs. The 40degree temperature and 85% humidity didn’t help matters. Matt however pushed through although much slower than he had anticipated but by that stage it was more to finish. In true Matt style, he has debriefed and already planning how to conquer the next race to get back onto the podium!

Ronan Paul raced the Tinman Triathlon at Primeview, Johannesburg which doubled up as Gauteng Provincial Championships in the Olympic distance: 1,5km swim, 40km ride and 10km run. It was going good with Ronan leading his age group out of T2 after the bike but 3km into the run felt a ni**le in his calf - with Ironman Mossel Bay in November as his major focus for the year he opted to stop in order to not potentially cause more damage. Tough call to pull out of a race when leading but the right one for the bigger picture.

Four years in the making - Josh Gillitt will finally be blasting through the Cape Town skyline at Red Bull King of the Air (KOTA).

KOTA is the most prestigious and sort after Big Air Kiteboarding event in the world. Only 18 riders are selected each year of which six already pre qualifier from the year before so really only 12 slots available. Through the year you can earn one of these slots by winning one of the KOTA qualifying events around the world or submit a video entry for a panel of judges to choose from.

Josh has wanted to compete in KOTA since he could remember but for two years he was too young(no under 16 riders can compete) and he pushed to get his entries for the next two years. This year he has produced strong performances on the Big Air World Tour including narrowly missing out on an automatic qualifier slot when he finished 3rd at KOTA Qualifier in Tarifa, Spain. Josh has produced strong content showcasing his ability during events and training and put together a great edit for video submission. There were a few set backs this year as with high risk comes consequences and Josh had a few big crashes leading to injuries but with focused rehabilitation and strength training he has got back on the water and in full focus of producing a top result at KOTA representing South African among the international field.

KOTA takes place in Tableview, Cape Town with a waiting period from 23 November to 8 December 2024 to ensure the best possible conditions for the athletes to take to the sky and astonish the crowds(thousands on the beach and even more on the live stream) with mind blowing combinations of tricks.

Matthew Healy Ultra is going for a “little trot” through the Arizona Desert tomorrow, Saturday 26th of October.

By “little trot” the Javelina Jundred is a 100mile(that is 161km) trail run in temperatures that are expected to reach 40degrees as well as a dry humidity. What makes it unique is that it’s made up of five loops of 20 miles which means that the runners are able to get familiar with the route and work out where they are going to push - it is expected to be fast! Add to this, the race is also a Golden Ticket opportunity to get into Western States next year!

We are pleased to welcome Alexa Godden to OneMovement Management.

Currently studying a BSC Business Administration through the University of London via correspondents which allows Alexa the opportunity to put in more time on the water. Focused on the process of constantly searching for fine details to improve with the goal of lining up at the LA2028 Olympics. Apart from her own ambitions, Alexa also looks to give back to the paddling community - as the sprint representative on the Dabulamanzi committee she looks to ensure that sprinting is being nutured and developed within the canoe club. Additionally, she coached the Parktown High School for Girls paddling team, getting many students to a level where they were competent and confident enough to race down a sprint course.

We look forward to working with Alexa, you can read more about her on our website - https://www.onemovement.co.za/alexa-godden.html

A fantastic weekend of top results in multiple disciplines of cycling and a marathon run for a great cause.

Ernie Roets raced two UCI Cat1 XCO races in Salmina Island, Greece on Friday and Sunday in the pursuit of building UCI points for the 2025 season. A small hiccup on day one saw him chasing hard to come home 11th and on day two put it together to finish 9th, a solid first Elite international racing experience for him collecting some points for his efforts.

Massi Ambrosi took to the start of his first cyclocross race in Syracuse, New York. Starting from the back row - he got his elbows out and moved his way to the front of the race which was a flat out hour effort with no feed zones and wet grass making traction difficult and obstacles testing his bike handling skills. Massi managed to surprise himself coming away with the win but has been warned that the next races obstacles are a lot bigger to bunny hop!

Daniel Le Roux had a dominant performance at the Western Province Track Championships hosted at the Bellville Velodrome:
1st 200m Individual Pursuit
1st 500m Time trial
1st 1500m Scratch Race
1st 5000m Scratch Race
1st 200m Match Sprint
2nd 7500m Points Race
1st Keirin

It was a wet 106km ride yesterday at the Amashova National Classic from Pietermaritzburg to Durban but that didn’t deter from a set of incredible results:
Adian Claassen | 4th u/19, 14th male overall - 2:16:42
Daniel Van Der Watt | 10th u/23, 27th male overall - 2:20:53
Josh Paul | 1st u/17, 63rd male overall - 2:38:32
Errin Mackridge | 1st u/19, 7th female overall - 2:52:17
Madison Bateson | 1st u/17, 8th female overall - 2:52:18

A break from cycling, Travis Goosen ran the Cape Town Marathon for the Warrior On Wheels Foundation where he pushed Oliver Bettendorf (born with Cerebral Palsy and is unable to walk independently as well as is non-verbal) in a wheelchair across the 42km route accompanied by a small group including Oliver’s mom Gillian. They absolutely smashed it running an incredible 4hours 30minutes cheered the whole way along the route!
